Are pentium 4s better than Core2Duo??

Hi i've got a question for all of ya'll

Theres this guy at my work who sets up all the networking for our computers and does computer builds all the time... I told him I waz building one, with a core2 e6700, for around 1,200... Well this guy comes back and say's to me that its a bad price and that the core2duos are all a bunch of hype...

He says he can build me a pentium 4 that will rip the hell out of a core2duo... For only like 900.00. I just wanted to know what you guys thought of this?? Is it true??

and if so, why would people be buying the core2duos if they weren't the fastest out there right now... He also told me that overclocking burns out your PSU in like 7 months..... I dunno man, i just don't know what to believe, cuz this guy is a pretty smart one, and i don't know if hes lying to me or not...

any thoughts???

core 2 duos are the best. even the lowest E6300 1.86Ghz will beat a p4. If your going to build a system with a C2D wait until April 22 as the prices are dropping

Murdock...

any suggestions on what I should say to combat him on the matter??? Maybe I didn't say it right, maybe its a pentium d.... But is there really anything better than a core 2 besides the extreme out there right now???

Cuz I do want him to build mine, just cuz he gets better prices than me... but, I am just wondering what I should say to him to make him understand...

Even if it was a Pentium D, Still Core2Duo CPUs are better than any Pentium.

Tell him to go read more and check out the latest benchmarks.

DO NOT get a Pentium as long as you have the money to get Core2Duo.

hahaha I will do!!! guy is a f-in smart-ass neways... he made me lose hope in the core 2!

He also told me the intel mobo is the best for the core2 and not the asus or gigabyte one, he says the intel is the BEST to use...???

Intel Core 2 Duo's is the new flagship for Intel, they will even say it is better than the P4.

There is normally good advice here on computer builds.

If you are not OC'ing I would suggest the Intel DG965WH, no sound card is needed, it supports about everything and is super stable.

I would suggest OC'ing but, what are you using it for? Use the Gigabyte DS3, that thing has overclocking right in its crosshairs.

You say that guy is smart, eh? Let me guess your network and PC's at work are down all the time. What a hater? Do NOT listen to that guy, the best selling processor on the market (right now) is probably the Core 2 Duo E6600. That will DEFINITELY knock any shape, form, or fashion of Pentium you can throw at it. If he thinks an OC'ed Pentium 4 can beat a Core 2 Duo, BS on him. Yeah, right, like hell it will:rolleyes:. Tell that guy to get on this forum, we'll straighten him up. That is the best I've heard in a while, just wait until the moderators and others see this, they will kill over laughing.

The processor speeds are (basically) not measured in Ghz anymore. Now it has a lot to do with the L2 Cache and the "pipelines". OC'ing does not run your processor down in 7-months, I know someone who has had his Pentium 4 OC'ed to 3.7Ghz for 14 months and not a problem yet, the Core 2 Duo is the best choice, Pentiums are outta date.

I think in this case, I will go for the gigabyte then.... I know the intel may be just what I need if i'm not ocing... but, at least if I want to in the future I have the option....

Also the guy said, which i hear nowhere on the forums here or on the "Building a computer" faq that you need to stand in one place and not walk around with your parts on the carpet otherwise, when you put the component in, it can mess up your whole system.... So you need to stand on plastic or something... is that true? cuz if so, they should add it to the computer building 101 page in the VERY beginning...

I know its all probably just a bunch of bullcrap and the guys been filling my head up with lies.... Ghaaa, sometimes people can have such an ego...

But, I thank you guys for all the help and for telling me the truth about this stuff....

This forum rocks!

He's right about that.. it's called ESD, electrostatic discharge.. the pc killer. PC repairmen usually have a special mat they stand on but you dont need this.. just ground the computer by plugging the power cord into it and make sure to touch the power supply before you touch anything.. each and every time. And if you want added protection you can take ona those mist spray bottles and and mist the room with water before touching anything(making sure you dont get your pc wet:eek: .) the humidity reduces static electricity. I havent read the 101 guide but i agree a section on this should be added if it's not there....

Do NOT leave the power cord plugged in, as some power is still running through the PC even though it is off.

As for the guy who said P4 was better than C2D, he's a ****nugget. Tell him to read ANY information regarding C2D vs P4

woops pentium d not pentium 4!

My mistake, i'm back at work and the guy told me if was a pentium D and NOT a pentium 4, he said the pentium D is 3.4 ghz which blows the core2 away because it has fewer pipelines than the core2duo... which means that it takes less time to get the information cuz it has less pipelines to go threw/??

is this true>?>>

hahahaha, please go back to this guy and ask him if he is taking the mick...

if not then i would seriously consider going to your superior and informing them that this lad has no idea what he is talking about :D

http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html

the benchmarks are there, plain and simple the core2duo line simply blows away the pentium D.

Just put it simply to him, why would intel release a cpu with new architecture that was worse than something thats already out?

Its like releasing a car with abs and power steering, then releasing a newer model with neither....completely pointless.

once finished please place your right hand to your forhead as a closed fist, extend your index finger up and your thumb out at right angles to it, look him straight in the eyes and repeat after me.... "loser"

:)

LESS pipelines, maybe, i couldn't say on that one, but the fact is that the core2duo's entire architecture (called "Core"... of course... which is a million miles different to NetBurst (of which ALL P4's and their variants were based upon)) was built around having SHORTER pipelines!

This combined with the fact that all core2duo's are manufactured on intels 65nm process technology, which is physically smaller. Pentium D's (the most main stream ones are manufactured on a 90nm process, which of course is larger. (There are a fair few models of the PD range that are based on 65nm as well, but by reading this it seems this guy is out to fleece you, and probably wouldn't be looking at these models)

How about we cut out the middle man, why don't you e-mail your so called "tech" guy the link to this thread and we can tell him how wrong he is. Maybe if he took his head out of the sand for 10minutes he could read it fully.

.....i still like my p4

it depends on what you need, and what you really want to spend

whatever you buy is gonna be piss poor in a year anyways, and i've never heard of anyone getting layed because their computer was so fast :)

i've still got a prescott 3.6, with ddr300 ram, and i can run vista ultimate fine

with 3 monitors hooked up, all running 1680x1050, with aero and all effects on, and with the windows sidebar on the right, secondary screen, i'm only maxxing out at ~55% cpu useage while browsing web pages on all 3 screens.

unless you NEED a $2k computer, don't bother buying a $2k computer. Because the $900 "crap" computer everyone here will tell you not to buy was someone else's $2k computer a year ago.

Well, yes, all that is true, but thats not the point of this thread, we are simply stating facts that core2duos are as a whole BETTER than pentium 4's, we were not sying which one to buy.

We are also trying to drum it into this stupid tech guys head that the above is true

hahahahahah true that!!! Thanks for all your guy's help... I mean the guys just got a big ego on him... hahaha and I showed him the benchmarks and told him that my friend had alot of comp skillz and said that the core2 is faster than the pentium D.... My friend being this forum of course hehe... and I also showed him the link to the benchmarks posted, and he was all like pissed off and didn't have anything to say about it...

then after like a minute of grunting and groaning he was like, "yeah well, maybe its a lil teeny tiny bit faster but its like 100 bucks more and you won't even notice the difference bro\"...

Then his ass just kept backtracking!!!!!!1 ahahahhaha, i love it, you guys rocked the house on this one...

I'm definitely sticking with the core 2, but I also just thought it was funny to see this guy lose his balls...

Haha, thats good to hear, but you can't beat the facts no matter how smart people think they are.

Glad to get it sorted

he is INCORRECT AGAIN! More pipelines = more data can get through at once = higher bandwidth = faster processing.

Maybe he's trying to get rid of all the P4's in the store or something? But most likely he's just an idiot.
