Are quad Q6600 crapy cores to OC?

The best I can get is 2.6 up from 2.4. Either I am doing something seriously wrong or this core is just a dud? BTW I have striker 2 board which alows the memory to be seperate from the CPU when OC'ing.
 
The Q6600 can be great overclockers, the key is the revision. The G0 revision is the most updated which runs cooler and is generally a better overclocker.

I was able to get my Q6600 up to 3.85GHz using water cooling, or up to 3.6GHz using air cooling.

You probably have a bottleneck someplace else, most likely the memory. You also don't want the memory to be separate from the FSB, as that lowers performance.
 
Even with a B3 it should OC past that speed. Are you overheating? What heatsink do you have and is it seated correctly?
 
I am starting to wonder if the quads are the way to go.I was thinking about a e8400 but they constantly run out of stock.Plus I have seen people like Omega get very good clockspeeds with q6600.From what I have read the quads are better for multitasking and more future proof.Even though you can get the E8400 up to 4.0 on air cooling would you notice a big difference between that and a q6600 at 3.6 oc in video games.It might be better to go ahead and get one of the quads for long term?

Thats what I am thinking. But doesn't having the memory sperate allow you to get greater CPU scores without raising the memory FSB? Or should I lower the memory so it rises with the CPU when OC'ing?
you might not have the G0 stepping. that could have something to do with it, methinks.

I don't know what it is called but it is attached to both the underside and dirrectly to the CPU. The CPU is running at about 22-24 degrees at idle @ 2.6 . It is of my opinion that the heatsink is not the problem, rather my ability to OC or the CPU really is a dud.

try ur PSU. I could OC mine until 2.7, now all of a sudden only to 2.5. When i OC to 2.7, it doesnt start up. It turns on for 3-5 seconds, and off. Whats the problem with mine?

jsut wondering btw, but do you have the SATA spread spectrum, and the PCI spread spectrum enabled? iirc the frequenties of that kind of stuff gets higher too when you overclock, and that really cant be overclocked (at least not much) before it causes system instabillity

I have the G0. And it does run really cool, but I don't know if that is my heat sink doing as most of the time at idle it runs about 22 deg.

I pretty sure I do have that enabled, it is my home PC and I can't check now, but I will get back to you.

"G0" and "B3" aren't really architectures, they're Steppings (or revisions, as some call them). It's kind of like a versioning system for processors. Letters reflect major changes, whereas numbers reflect minor changes. However, the actual architecture is basically same...of course changes are made, but still.

Well said, but G0 and B3 are technically called the revision, the stepping (for the G0) is just B.
 
note: some programs say version 1.2 some games say revision 1.2 ;) I think you get my point :)
its all a matter of definition
