ASUS Motherboard No Boot

I am having an issue with my ASUS M4A79 Deluxe not booting. I am running AMD Phenom X4 9950, 4 Gig Ram, GeForce 8800 GT video card, 1.5 TB HDD. According to ASUS power calculations, I am about 200 watts short on the power supply as I have a 550 watt installed. I understand that this can cause stability issues and do not have a problem with a replacement if this is the only problem. My question is, not only can I not get the system to boot to BIOS, I cannot even get a flicker on the screen and the power LED will only flicker a few times and then goes dark. The case I purchased did not have a beep speaker connector so I cannot do any analyzation on that level. Also, the manual states the 8 pin EATX connection must be made or the system will not boot. My board had four of the eight slots covered and my 550 PSU only had a four slot plug. Can this be further non boot evidence of insufficent power?

This is my first system build and I do learn from my mistakes. Any help on this will be very much appreciated.

If you're power supply is not providing what you need then it is a pretty good bet therein lies your issue. I have seen many rigs with excellent hardware like your's but the psu they skimped on due to "budget" concerns. The PSU is the backbone of any build.

Try this: Unplug all non-essential components and then power on. Does it boot?

I think you are absolutely right. Since this was my first build, I asked for recommendations on all the components. Obviously not all the information was accurate. That video card alone takes a lot of the power.

Anyway, I am off to get an 800 watt unit.

Thanks much for your help.

Keep in mind that you can get 800W power supplies that are excellent and 800W psus that are 800 in name only. Buy carefully.

With all due respect, the system should boot just fine with 550 watts or 450 watts or 350 watts. Get the system down to the essentials - mainboard, processor, memory, mouse and monitor. Use the onboard video. Now you will know where the problem is likely to be.

I agree. That is why I suggested that he just try to undo all non-essentials and see if it would boot up.

I disconnected the HDD and the optical drives and it booted.

I bought an 850 Watt Corsair. Have not installed it yet. Being inexperienced, I took recommendations from the tech people at the store. It was pretty reasonbly priced at $179.

Whats the tought? I will wait for responce before proceeding.

Thanks much for all the input.

You can find a beautiful Ultra X3 850 watt modular PSU for about $170 if you know where to look, VERY nice, the one i'm using. Great price too.

Okay, then just reconnect your harddrive and see if it boots up. If it did then shut it down and reconnect your optical drivers one at a time, boot up again.

At what point doesn't it boot up?

Now that you know your mainboard and memory are working properly, you need to reconnect things one at a time to see which one causes the failure to boot. Connect one thing, boot, disconnect, connect something else, boot etc. At some point the board will fail to boot unless you connected something incorrectly in the first place. Then you will know where the problem is.

I run into a booting problem very rarely. Most of the time it results from an error on my part. It isn't often the hardware. When it is the trouble shooting process is pretty simple.
