ATI Warning Message, Dell Inspiron 1501, HELP?!

Hey, so whenever I try to play Fallout or Fallout 2 on my computer, a Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop from November, 2007, it runs for about five seconds, then immediately I get this error message:

"This message is to inform you that a video resolution lower
than 1280 x 800 was requested. Resolution changes can be requested
by the user, an application (i.e. a game), or the operating system.
Resolution settings lower than 1280 x 800 could result in a "fuzzy"
looking display. The LCD panel of your computer appears best at
resolution setting 1280 x 800.

Close in 15 seconds"

Then there's this little check-box down at the bottom that says "Don't display this message again".

By the way, I do NOT have this hooked up to any sort of external display, so we can rule that out.

But immediately when this comes up it goes out of the game and to my desktop, or next application, and doesn't appear anymore. So I can't check the box or close the warning. Every time that I run Fallout or Fallout 2 it does this, and I get about five seconds til it happens, and only about a second or a half second to even see it.

This was also doing it with Diablo II, but for some reason or another it (mostly) stopped.

I have also noticed that, in these three games, translucent or dark/black colors become "psychedelic". I recently wiped and re-installed Windows XP on my laptop, but I installed all drivers except for "Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus", but that's for audio, and I have audio working. I am not missing any other drivers. Is there any way to at least get the message from appearing? And any help solving the psychedelic coloring problem would be great, because it makes the games very hard to play.

Thanks

Oh, and here are some images of my problems. For some reason the background appears black, but you can see the coloring problems and the warning message:

The LCD panel of your computer appears best at
resolution setting 1280 x 800.

Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious, but have you tried to set your resolution to 1280x800 before starting the game?

this message is to inform you that a video resolution lower
than 1280 x 800 was requested.

I missed this part - the game wants a resolution lower than your current setting, so try setting your resolution lower before starting the game and see if that works out?

hey thanks man! yeah i set it to 800 x 600, and it came up with the error message, because the resolution had been requested, but the message didn't go away so i checked "don't show this message again", and clicked "okay", then set it back to 1280 x 800, and now it's working fine.

if i have any more problems i'll be sure to post again, but thanks!

Wait - the game wants to run in something less than 1280x800, but you get an error message in 800x600 - so if I were you, I would try something in between, like 1024x768 - that is probably the resolution the game is made to run in. ;)

re: this topic

Sorry to bump a very old thread, but this is the exact same problem I'm having now. I want to try what worked for cyerpunk1993, but I don't know how to adjust my computer's resolution (I'm a n00b when it comes to most computer stuff). How do I change my computer's resolution?

FYI, I'm trying to run Fallout 1/2/Tactics on a Dell Inspiron 1501, too. I found this topic by typing the specific error message into google. I'm surprised but calmed by how the exact same thing has happened to someone else.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Try right click on your desktop and see if resolution comes up us not knowing
what OS you are using.

It worked. I got past this problem, and Fallout 1 is working perfectly. I think I need some patches for Fallout 2, so I'm going to go look for them now. I managed to get past this and get installed though, thanks to your help.

Thank you.
