Tell me what brand and type of each peice of a computer(MoBo, HD, CPU, graphics card, RAM...) to best fit the following. I'm looking for a $400 budget but I can be flexible.

>Sub par sound card, I have one but it is unlikly to fit a newish MoBo
>Graphics card at least average, I don't need superb though because I'm not buying a fancy new monitor.
>about 70gb HD
>at least 1 gb RAM
>a little better than average processor

I have a plain box white case, I plan to use the computer a ton so it needs to have good cooling. I use cheepo monitors so I don't need the best ever graphics card, I barly use sound and if I do I don't currently have working computer speakers so I hook up an old stereo speaker. I have a CD re-writer that is decently new. This will be a home desktop computer with mostly just net browsing. I want a computer that can handle a good amount of abuse.

Thank you.

CPU: $114.50

MOBO $60

RAM: $38

Hard Drive: $55

Power Supply: $100

Optical Drive: $24

Comes to $391.50, but of course you can save a bit of money on the PSU, and spend more on your processor. That mobo should do well enough in the line of onboard video, as you said you won't be gaming.

THANK YOU!!!!
I do play games but nothing like WoW, which might count as not gaming though...

Won't I need a graphics card too? If they cost under or around $25-$35 It should be alright.

The reviews on the Antec power suply scared me a bit. >>

Didn't I just mention how XP home was going to cost a fortune compared to the cost of the computer?

Vista hasn't had a chance to have the major or even minor bugs fixed yet. The other computers in this house run 2000(or mell whichever wasn't a failure), Win98, and my corrupted comp's XP pro. I highly doubt Vista is compatable with the 98. Hell, my XP and 98 had wars going between them. Besides don't OSs just require more and have more useless shit the newer they are?
Those things, and the newer the OS the faster is it for my to unintentionally corrupt or otherwise 'kill'/'murder' the HD. Accually come to think of it the 95 just got a phoneline power surge and died, the 98's battery tried to ****ing kill me, but the XP pro was corrupted thoguht my anti virus in 6 months and this comp (2000) is showing corruption signs but is still working extremly well.

Accually, maybe the 95 wouldn't be so bad, it might even be the first computer I can recall that's FASTER THAN MY NET.

Will the configuration posted by schoning16 work also for a Maxtor model:86480D6,PCBA/Uplevel:04C HD from my corrupted computer?

There's no need to spend anywhere near that much on a PSU for that system. Something like a COOLER MASTER eXtreme RP-500-PCAR ($29.99 AMIR), or if you don't like MIRs, an XCLIO Goodpower 500W ($49.99) would be quite sufficient. Even this Hipro 400W ($29.99) will do the job.

Personally, I'd be spending the $89 on Windows XP (and the PSU downgrade almost funds it). I'm not even sure that there will be Windows 95 drivers available for all your hardware.

If you'd like to cut costs further, consider an AMD X2 3600+ or 3800+ based build.

I didn't copy the links right... >.< I'll fix them in a sec. FIXED

Will the PSU It probably should be a bit better than I need. As I said it need to be able to take a tone of abuse and work 16-18 hours a day with too many things open. If I can still safly downgrade it I will most likely put that money into something else to improve, maybe a card reader/writer and/or some super rechargeable camera batteries since mine lose thier charge really fast lately.
About the XP pro, I think I know someone who is updraging to Vista and will soon have a spare XP pro disk. :D It's not a done deal yet though.
I heard AMD doesn't handle a mess of apps open nor lasts as long as Intel...

The XClio should be able to handle the strain, I've heard good things about them. The AMD is a good CPU, I have an Athlon64 3800+ and it happily runs Debian with 7 or 8 windows open, including Konsole.
