Beryl

Im a full noob.

I just want to no how to install Beryl or compiz fusion. Can someone explain every detail step by step. Then i can move onto my next problem.

no matter what blueplum tried nothing works for him, just re-install ubuntu fresh.
and go via synaptic instead of terminal. he pushed too hard and now nothing works...LIFE
 
OMG HOW AM I SOPPOSED TO UNINSTALL IT? And its still goood! we can fix it! just need to work togever to make a better tommorow

You have at least a half-dozen Threads you either started/hijacked trying to fix this problem. That makes it *EXTREMELY* hard for those of us trying to help you...help you.

You need to start ONE Thread, and only Post in that ONE Thread regarding your Desktop Effects. By Posting in six different Threads, you're making it nearly impossible to keep track of where you are in the process. Also, you're getting five different ways of doing things from five different people, and interchanging instructions at various points. It's flat-out futile to even attempt to install something that way.

You need to take about 15 minutes, and write a new Post on what you've done so far (ie: system specs (mainly, Graphics Card Manufacturer), installed 7.10, enabled Restricted Extras, installed the Compiz package, etc.) so all of us are on the same page and don't have to follow a half-dozen Threads to make sense of this.

I have no idea where you are in the process at this point after reading all of your posts scattered across 6 different Threads. You need to consolidate all the info into one Thread, and then just Post there. Don't ask a related-question in another Thread - put everything in the new one you make.

The Post that took me 15 mins

Ok here it is...

I installed linux ubuntu because i wanted the graphical effects, I have a dell latitude d600 and im running the efects on extra no problems at the moment. I enterd some code from a diifernt website and if it says " direct : yes " i can run effects.

I tried entering come codes and i do fine but when i enter " ccsm " ( or somthing along the lines of that ) and it says " ccsm is currently not installed. you can install it by typeing: sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager, You will have to enable component called 'universe'

i then type in " sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager "
It then says some stuff but on the last line it says " E: Couldn't find package compizconfig-settings-manager.

I havn't installed anything besept ubuntu OS.

I hope thats long enogh :D.

Please help ASAP.

Click on APPLICATIONS, then ADD/REMOVE. It will open a window. At the top right-hand corner, you will see a box. Click the box and select 'All Available Applications'. When asked to reload, press YES.

Now, look to the left-side of the window. Click OTHER. Check the box next to 'Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (ccsm)'. Move to the lower-right of the screen, click APPLY CHANGES.

After changes are applied, reboot the computer and load up Ubuntu again. Press ALT+F2, type 'ccsm' (no quotes). This will open the Compiz Manager, from which you can access any of the effects.

Now, in order to use Compiz, you need to have a separate, supported graphics Card. TO ENABLE YOUR GRAPHIC CARD'S RESTRICTED DRIVERS: Click SYSTEM, then ADMINISTRATION, then RESTRICTED DRIVERS MANAGEMENT. Enter your password. If you Graphics Card is supported by the system, you will see it listed. Check the box next to it, then Click APPLY. If you do not see your Graphics Card, then, I'm sorry, but you can not use the effects on your system, and it is a moot point to continue, I'm sorry.
 
im clciking it but it wont check the box :(.

So i clicked it and restarted it thinking maby it is all ready checked. then when i hit alt f2 typed in cmss it said " could not open location 'file:///ccsm'

Clicked what? What wasn't supported?
 
In add/remove programs im clciking on cmss but it wont check the box, so i restarted it anyways typed in that stuff in alt f2, and it said " the error above"

Help?
 
Blue, it's time to suck it up as a lost cause. Your graphics card obviously won't support what you're trying to to, and nothing we do from this point on will make it work. It's time to admit defeat. I'm sorry.

Stick with Windows and the program you said worked with it. You'll have much better luck with that rather than continuing to beat this dead horse.
