ok I want to build a file server with 10TB of disk space .. now i've jst been coming across a few issues ..

OK i'm obviously gona be using 10 1TB hdd's I have a hookup which they can get them for me 50% off (yay) 130 nzd or so (so like 80ish usd)

A) how do i fit them all into a case and also have fans blowing on them.. as they'll be stacked above each other which will generate a bit of heat ..

the bottom ones will most prob have a fan slot for it .. but i'm guessing i'll have to use some 5.25" bays .. which generally doesn't have fans directed at them

B)what mobo fits the most sata connectors .. and I also understand i'll prob have to use a pci-x sata controller or something ..

C) is there a way which i can use JBOD interchangingly(if thats the right term) between 2 controllers .. cause i just want it to look like 1 giant harddrive .. so I don't have to go through like 10 HDD's to find stuff

First of all why the mass data ? why 10TB ?
second, a standard ATX casing won't fit 10 drives you already know that
Third, why not get 4 - 1TB drives and raid them ?

whatever you're going to do with the PC, JBOD in my knowledge is not a good idea, especially in performance

Sorry I can't really help, but i have a feeling it is one of those "If you have to ask, you probably shouldn't be doing it".

Look into the Stacker case. (or any big case with 5.25" slots over the whole front of the case.

(this one I mean)

then put 3 of these in it:

(or these, depends on what looks you want ^.^ )

then you should be just peachy. altough, you mgiht have to place some fans in teh case to get the hot air out too. (like the crossover fan for the stacker, and some in the backside.

Then get a good motherboard with as many sata ports as you can, and then if you need more buy a PCI sata card.

umm i need 10TB cause i wana archive all my movies music tv shows, photos etc .. everything ... I currently have like 6TB of data .. and could do with alot more space ..

I'm one of those guys that neva delete stuff ..

I'm not looking for performance as its only a file server ... I'm not really looking for reliability .. so 4 hdd's in raid won't be much use cause least if its JBOD and 1 hdd dies it won't effect the whole raid array .. (if i was using raid) .. theres raid 5 .. but most mobo only have 6 sata which means i only get 5 and then if i want 10TB of storage .. i'll have 2 get another raid 5 controller .. which will cost alota money for a raid 5 controller + time to set up .. and 2 wasted drives .. I don't care too much about if 1 hdd frys .. the things i care about (mainly my foto's) which have been backed up 3 times ..

If i dont go JBOD .. i don't really see how else i'd set it up .. don't really want to use software raid ..(or is that not that bad since i'm not after performance).. i don't really want like 10 hdd's showing up .. like C:, D:, E:, F:,G:,H: .. u get the point .. i want it clean .. so i don't have to store crap on my personal computer ..

but those 5.25" cool master 3 in 4 things are real cool .. i gota get me some of them ..

Something tells me that this is against forum RULES.

So you have 6tb of data on what hdd?

seems to me like that amd fx motherboard meant to have the two fx processors hitched together had 12 sata ports on it

g25racer - You'd be surprised how much space you can use in relatively short amounts of time when recording off the tv, especially HD. Go back and reread this guys' post, he says as much and more. It's called a PVR. (like a better TIVO)

Buy a mac PRo case off ebay then take out the Ram slots and put 6HDDS in their then on the top of the case theres room for 4HDDS but cooling might go awol. I don't know. Maybe just buy those external HDDS cases.

He has been on for ages, but his posts have been better as well!

Thanks for the backup LOL

Srry guys it just seems to dumb to build something with 10tb of storage. The only reason someone would need all that storage for is for downloading movies, music, and such to store.

Kinda common sense, no?
