Dell 8300 Dimension PC
Windows XP Professional

Our power went off and when PC was rebooted got this message:

Problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to PC.

UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME
STOP: 0X000000ED (0X87379C08, 0XC0000006, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

Make sure anynew hardware or software is properly installed. Disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components restart PC, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Only thing added/changed to PC was that I downloaded a screensaver at a site I have used before and believe to be safe.

However, F8 will not work and I cannot get into safe mode. What is wrong and how can I fix it?

Sounds like something happened to your hard drive. Download the hard drive manufacturer utility and test the hard drive.

I would first try booting with "last known good configuration" if that were available. Then Safe Mode. If F8 does not work, have you tried other keys - some Dells use F2 for the Setup.

0x000000ED: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
The kernel mode I/O subsystem attempted to mount the boot volume and it failed.

Do what voyagerfan99 recommends: Run harddrive diagnostics.

wrong....

This is actually my sister's PC and I am posting for her.

I meant "my" answer sounded rude... not you. (see above). Just sounded sort of snippy and I didn't mean it that way. I will tell her to test her hard drive. I'll download that link to a CD. Many, many thanks to all. :)

When power is abruptly killed from a pc it usually causes errors on the hard drive and it will have problems booting up. You don't have to reinstall windows, all that is needed is to run the hard drive makers disk diagnostic utility and run the extended test by booting the cd that has the utility on it.

I've also had some luck booting from a ubuntu disk and accessing the drive to pull all desired user files off.... then running scans/repairs on the HDD.

HUH?

Sis got impatient and totally wiped the PC clean and reinstalled everything. However....she cannot get the PC to recognize the internet connection. She called Bluebird Wireless and they told her she didn't need a disk or anything to access the connection. They suggested that she reset the connection by unplugging the radio and then plugging it back in but that didn't work either. She tried using the "create an internet connection" wizard but it didn't work. The wireless radio has a wire that runs down the tower into the office that plugs into a switch and her PC is plugged into the switch. She did reinstall the DLink switch software on her PC, but still no connection.

Any suggestions?

She most likely needs the driver for the wireless adapter. If she has a disc for it, use that. Otherwise go on the companies website and download the driver. You can save it to a USB flash drive and then install it.

It is one of the most feared colors in the world is blue. Death (BSOD) when something is terribly wrong in the infamous blue screen will pop up NT process. As well as blue screen, the screensaver will be modeled after a real blue screen, boot screen to simulate the process start in the works.
