Blue Screen Of Death

one more thing. My first message on this thread was what I was doing when this happened which was downloading about 10 pics from limewire and installed a new program from download.com. could any of those things triggered it?

Probably because it got caught in a buffer loop just before your system crashed. Things like this happen.

If the BSOD ever stays up long enough, let us know the error codes. Beyond that, no need to re-hash what has been said several times already.

On the note of BSODs killing your system: If they occur frequently enough, you could start to loose data on your hard drives (mid-write crash for example) and eventually that could lead to your system not booting properly. Other than that, BSODs don't "kill" your system any quicker than shutting down and restarting. They are just an error reporting mechanism.

Only if any of those contained a nasty bug...

If this has only happened once, let it be. If it occurs more frequently, as in every day/hour/log in, then you have bigger problems.

They are hardware related errors. Maybe your RAM wasn't dumping correctly and caused the BSOD. The only way to pinpoint the BSOD is to get the error and look it up.

Or I guess you could TRY to cause the same error again, and figure it out that way... its a lot harder, though...

Um... Chill? ;)

Your computer may be fine. Use it and report back if the BSODs become frequent or if you have other issues. If you are up to it, re-seat your components (RAM/GPU/Cables/etc.).

Already stated. haha jk:D I wouldn't worry about it too much, if it's something that re-occurs constantly I world definitely re-seat and make sure everything is sound in the case. At the least I would run memtest, and some other tools to check hardware.
 
Ok, as far as BSODs are concerned, the best course of action to take is to try to get the information that comes up on the screen as far as the program or file that caused the problem, and also the "Stop Error" that is listed as well. This usually comes in the form of 0x0000000, or something like that (any combination of numbers and letters).

Once you have this information, search on Google for the Stop Error that you wrote down, and then combined with the results that you get and the program that seemed to have caused the problem, you should be able to figure out what to do. In fact Microsoft provides explanations on many of these stop errors and what causes them, although not all. That's where the information from Google, or members on this site come into play.

For the time being though, continue to use your computer as you normally do, and IF it blue screens again, write down the above mentioned information before restarting the computer and post it here or look it up on Google to get further explanation on what to do. Granted, it sounds like the computer might be restarting too soon to be able to get everything down, but it's still worth a try... :)

Thanks guys, I will use my pc as normal and will report the code. Shall I press F8 as i next start her up and then disable reboot on system failure? then I could jot down the code if it ever came up again?
 
My suggestion would be to not try to mess with that debugging tool. It is not a novice-user program by any means, I don't like really messing with the thing. If you've got the automatic reboot from crashing function disabled, then just keep using your computer as you have. When and IF it ever blue screens again, we'll tackle that problem when it comes up... So again, at this time I believe your best course of action would be to just use your computer as usual, and if by chance it crashes again (because it might not...), record the information and we'll go from there.
