Budget Build

I don't think we need to beat the heck out of that psu.

It's got good reviews, and if it fails, Newegg has excellent return policies.

State your opinion and move on.

This is the best I could come up with

PSU

CPU

RAM

GPU

it's a little over budget but I didn't won't to skip on quality every thing is good quality and will last a long. I'm sure he can get a little extra money together.

Some places you can cut cost:

Athlon II X2 240:

PSU, Xclio stablepower 500W is actually a bit better than the OCZ StealthXStream and $10 less:

+1 on the PSU but I'm going to have to disagree on the CPU maybe this instead http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103694 that would put it just below $300.
The athlon II X2 has 2mb of faster L2 Cache, and no L3 cache.
The Phenom II X2 has 1MB of L2 cache, and 6mb of the slower L3 cache

They both would overclock similarly, and in gaming would perform roughly the same.(The Athlon II X2 and Phenom II X2 are both the same architecture)

Damn you always make me feel stupid lol well the good thing is he can upgrade his CPU and GPU in the future without having to buy new mobo or PSU.

Solid advice so far, thank you all. :D

So an AM3 socket system is preferrable to a LGA775? Interesting, I mean I never even thought of looking into AMD systems. Nice.

I think the idea of buying a motherboard with onboard video and waiting (and therefore spending less all at once) for the game to come out before getting a GPU is a great idea. I'll bring it up with him.

Brought up the idea of going with onboard until later, he seemed okay with it, but then again he thought about just waiting and saving up cash. After all the game doesn't come out until November.

My friend liked these two processors,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103649

AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Black Processor

and

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103680

AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Callisto 3.1GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 80W Dual-Core Processor

He wanted to know which would be the better choice.

I told him what I knew, or thought I knew. That the dual core is not that much cheaper than the triple core but the only time the performance difference would be real noticeable is when running more than one intensive program. I.E. Call of Duty and running disk defragmenter in the background.

And this motherboard.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128397

GIGABYTE GA-MA785GMT-UD2H AM3 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Just giving out what he found/wanted and what all you gurus thought. If any of those parts are not recommended, it would sure be nice to know instead of blindly continuing forward.

Any information you have will be shared with him. (He doesn't have a computer yet, therefore no internet, and therefore he cannot ask you all these questions himself.)

Thanks again in advance for any replies,

Maverick720

A Phenom II X2 is a waste of money, if your going dual go with an Athlon II X2 240 and overclock it, or get a Phenom II X3 710 or 720, the 710's will hit at least 3.2 just on the stock heatsink, and around 3.6 on an aftermarket from what ive seen. Also, games will start using more multiple threads vs higher clocked dual cores, and even then you can overclock the tri cores to the same speeds you can overclock a phenom II X2 to. It depends how much you want to spend, but go with one of these cpus:
Phenom II X3 720 -$120
Phenom II X3 710 -$100
Athlon II X2 240- $67 (The Athlon II X2 is basically a Phenom II X2, but with more L2 Cache and no L3 cache, which even so they perform pretty much identical)

That motherboard is AM3, meaning you need ddr3 memory. These boards are am2+ and support ddr2:

Ahh, thank you Bomberboy.

So this motherboard:

GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

coupled with these

AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Black Processor

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

XCLIO STABLEPOWER 500W 500W ATX SLI Ready Active PFC Power Supply

would work just fine with the addition of an ATI 4850/4870 or NVIDIA 9800 GTX +/GTS 250 later down the road?

Also, were this to be the build, what aftermarket heatsink would you recommend? Overclocking is very likely. (It won't be very excessive, but he likes to tinker with things)
