Hey all, basically my friend wants me to build him a computer, but he wants to save money by keeping his current case and HDD, so his limit is around £400.
for that price what kind of Quad-core based computer could i build him? :o:good:

Thanks Bodaggit :good:

and btw the graphics card link u posted is now half the price!!

I think bodaggit made a mistake in that link, as that link is to a 9500gt and the wording says GTS 250. I am pretty sure he was referring to this gpu:

Bear in mind you will need to find these on something such as overclockers or ebuyer as newegg only ships to china, usa, and canada.

thanks for the headsup, erm tbh hes only gonnna be using it for surfing and films and such, but he wants it to be future proof-ish and seeing as how hes not a gamer im thinking a q8600 will be better suited rather than a dual core like the e8500, but like they are the same price?

so shall i stick to a quad or shall i just put in a gd dual like the e8500?

how about this of amazon in uk

Total 324

Its not as gd as that intel, but its cheaper. It all depends on wat he is goin 2 use it 4. This would b gd at everything, but if he wants it 4 gaming i suggest spending a bit more on the motherboard (AM3 maybe) and cpu.

Considering intel 775 and AMD AM2+ are on their way out i dunno if its a gd idea to buy into either, they would not b future proof, tho at the moment gd bang 4 buck. The cheapest i7 build i worked out was 550 quid (not including psu),which i know is over budget. Maybe he should save a bit long and also the prices may come down a bit, i think an AM3 build would b cheaper than this tho.

Yeah, cr@p. Forgot to change the link. Thanks Bomber.

You'll have to forgive me, the only criteria you gave was
to build a Quad, so I did. The best one I could within the budget.

If your friend is not going to game, just get him a Core 2 Duo and a cheaper GPU. Those can always be changed later.

I assure you, the list(s) I put together are compatible.

As for your list, the Motherboard has 1333/1600 FSB,
and the CPU is 1066.

Also, you chose DDR2 1066 RAM, and the board likes 1200.

I guess they would work together, but your board will be bottlenecked by your CPU and your RAM.

Also, I've never heard of that brand of PSU.?

Yes, get some OCZ Freeze or Tuniq TX-2 thermal paste.

As long as the motherboard is Retail, it should come with all your drive cables. Check to make sure what comes with it.

I see you chose a Q6600. Fantastic chip, but if you don't plan to overclock, for the same money, a Q9400 might be better to leave stock.

WOW newegg is cheap, i cant find a q9400 chip for less than £200 which is around $300!
the q6600 is £50 cheaper so around $75!

Bummer. You'll be fine with the 6600 though.
Stellar chip, just not as fast stock. It will overclock willingly though, if your board will allow it. :D
