Building my own....

ok i was trying to find if the motherboard you posted was am3 but cant find it.

i think its only am2

thanks for all the help now i will start to order some things.

I would second the build that StrangleHold posted, those AM3 builds are really good preformance wise, and they don't totally empty you wallet either.

EDIT: You can update the BOIS so it can support AM3, or maybe you don't have to. But it supports it though.

Its a AM2+ board, has DDR2 slots. A AM3 board has DDR3 slots.

AM3 processors are backward compatible with AM2+ boards, well most atleast.
The AM3 processor has a dual DDR2 and DDR3 memory controller.

Bios 0205 supports the Phenom II 710. As far as updating it, depends on how new the board is that newegg sends out if that bios is preinstalled. Asus has a windows bios program that pretty easy to use. If not the old floppy way will work.

Most are bios fixes, to recognize new processors, or improved memory support. Sometimes they might add new bios features. But you only update them if you need to for one of the above.

Adding the harddrive I listed is going to run it alittle over 700, but you could go for a cheaper case to make up for it, or go for it and strain alittle.:P

Its best to do it with the bios. With the 710 you have to bump up the CPU bus. Start with around 5 mhz. at a time till it gets unstable, back off or start raising the CPU voltage up some. The Memory and HT speed will increase too, so after a point you will have to back your memory and HT back some or increase there voltage.

Most X3 710 will hit around 3.3 or 3.4 ghz. pretty easy. Got this X3 720 at 3.7 ghz. with 1.425 voltage. But the 720 is a BE model with a unlocked multiplier, easier to overclock and a higher yield core.

wow it can go that high? does overclocking shorten the life span of the processor? sounds like a good buy if i can get it that high. and also should i get an aftermarket cpu fan? if so what are some reasonable ones? again thanks so much. how willi know if its unstable? will it shut off etc? i was doing some research on the cpu and came across this...is this true? and can it work with any board

i also like the 720 as well lol...so i might go that route

As long as you dont go nuts with the CPU voltage and keep the temps. down, it will be outdated before any damage happens if any at all.

You will start getting lock ups/windows errors, so on.

Yes (some) X3 710 and X3 720 can have a stable 4th core and can be uplocked. Dont believe it works with Nvidia chipset boards though. Only AMD chips boards with the SB750 southbridge.

If you wanted to go with a AMD chipset.
Change the board to this one, saves 30 bucks.

Then change the Video card to a 4850 so you could crossfire later, equal in performance to a GTS 250

If you want a HDMI port.

Yes if your going to overclock much it would be better to use a aftermarket cooler.
Pretty good ones.

i should be fine with just 3 and overclock it. would it be worth it to spend the extra few bucks and get the 720?

Well for 20 bucks difference, I would myself. Better yield core and overclocks easier. All you have to fool with is the X and CPU voltage. The Memory and HT will stay at stock settings.

ok sounds good ill go that route. thanks so much again lol. on the 720 i seen you said it has the 4th core. is it worth it to unlock it or just keep it at 3 and oc it.
