I was wondering if you can take a retail PC such as a HP and switch the case on it such as buying one from newegg. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help i am new to here. My parents got me an HP desktop with a q6660 quad processor and I am thinking of overclocking it.

It's not required but is alot better. Just get a big case like the antec 900 and add a couple fans and a good cpu fan. Liquid cooling looks cool but I am afraid something would leak!!

Not really, it just depends on everything else that you have. Do you plan on overclocking it as it is now? If so, I think you might want a better mobo as it will have more options in the bios for OC'ing.

Basically, I got a lot of money for my birthday and want to put it into my computer. Everything is stock on the hp thats why I plan on buying a new case and then overclocking the q6660 because i here it is pretty easy. The motherboard is a Asus IPIBL-LA which is stock. Would you recommend purchasing a motherboard to go along with the case and if so what one?

the liquid used for liquid cooling kits is non conductive and will never cause a short. even if they use water, it is demineralized water, which is also non conductive

I had to upgrade my video card last year so I could play star Trek: Legacy. I had a low-profile case with my Gateway E-4100 so I got a MicroFly black mATX case and switched it into that. Too small for my taste though. Not enough space for working and cables etc.

If you swap motherboards make sure your operating system on your hard drive will boot with a new motherboard. Your operating system is only licensed to that HP, it can't be swapped into other comps and swapping motherboards will in effect make it think you did that and throw up a red flag. In my opinion I'd take your money and buy a good power supply and video card to go along with that quad core and put it in the HP case. The 8800GT's and 9600GT's should have no problem fitting in a HP case.

thank you for the suggestion but if i got the license number for it couldn't i just enter it on the new motherboard

Did the HP ship with a copy of Windows and a recovery DVD with a passcode? Then that might work, sure. I'm not saying it wont work, I'd look into it. =) Just out of curiosity what are your plans for the comp after the case swap? Because if you have a good chip and motherboard and you're into overclocking and gaming you'll want a good video card and that will need a good power supply. Also the aftermarket motherboards run faster RAM then what comes with an HP so at some point you might end up upgrading that. Sooner or later you might not have any parts left over from the HP! lol. Good luck with it...
