fixing a computer for a freind. he left his computer on when he went to bed in the morning the screen was black.
I couldnt get it to load so I stuck in his XP disk and went with "repair" (winXP pro). when I put the disk in all goes swimmingly till the set up screen says "starting windows" (this is before I even get to the repair screen) and it just freezes.

so for kicks I swapped out the hard drives and set to reload a fresh XP and the same problem. I thru in a win98 disk on a wim and it loaded right up with no hiccups.

hiren boot cd tests show memory, motherboard, drives, etc are all good.

so my question is: why would it load win98 and not XP?

thanks

Bad driver or bad hardware would be my guess. Look at the XP install cd and see if its scratched or anything. Try using a different cd of the same version of windows you are trying to install.

yip done that and still same results. also had to re-do my system last week and used the same disk that worked then with no luck. I havnt run into this problem before got me scratching my head.

also swapped out the ribbon cables with no success.

UPDATE:
buddy informs me that the fan over the secondary processor had seized up a while ago on him and would that make a differnce......Doh!

not the CPU but the smaller chip that usually only has a heatsink on it, this one came with a small heat sink and fan. I did replace the fan, but Im thinking he burned it and thats why windows stopped working....just a working theory.

so Im chalking this one up to bad MB.

thanks for the help johnb35
