cd burning not always working

Hi,
I have a new Dell desktop with windows 7. I don't know if I have a problem or if this is normal. both drives (model #'s I believe are BH30N and GH50N from device manager) seem picky about burning. I've never had to format a cd before when putting pictures on a disc, before this computer. I thought that was automatic when adding files to a new blank cd. Sometimes I'll get an error stating "invalid MS-dos function," sometimes it seems to recognize a disc and sometimes not until after formatting. It will tell me to insert a blank writable disc when there is one already inserted. Formatting the cd let it be recognized when I tried that last night. I haven't narrowed down if anything is constant depending on if I'm using a cd-r or cd-rw. Seems to happen on both drives. Both device drivers say they are dated 2006, but says I have the latest driver when I search online via device manager. Any help appreciated, maybe this is normal?

You might want to try updating the firmware and/or changing the brand of media you are using. Windows will use its native cdrom/dvdrom device driver so there will be no updated drivers available. What software are you using to burn?

My cd-r's are a different brand than my cd-rw's. I'm just burning pictures directly from Windows. How do I update the firmware?

Thanks. Any tips for also checking for updated firmware? I didn't see anything on Dell's website.

I already downloaded the one for the gh50n from Dell and when opening it showed I already had the current version. Seems this isn't the problem then since there's nothing available. I'll have to try your 3rd party software although it's weird that I can burn photos to disc easily on my windows 7 laptop but have to go through all the formatting to be able to on this desktop.

A friend of mine had exactly the same problem, after trying different software solutions (and firmware) she called dell support and found out it was a faulty drive. Dell replaced it and all is fine,

Thanks. I may give Dell a call. I thought of that but it seems odd that both my drives are doing it and not just one.
