'Cheap as chips' build

May or may not be able to speak to the guy today (depending on whether school is open or not). If it is, I'll let him know what I've come up with, if not, then I'll have to wait until another day. Hopefully all is OK.

I can't say for sure if Minecraft likes CPU or GPU more, but I can tell you this:

  • AMD Phenom II X2 555 BE @ 3.8GHz
  • Hynix 4x1GB DDR2 800MHz
  • AMD Radeon HD 5770 1GB

On a 1280x1024 monitor with the following settings:
  • Graphics: Fast
  • Render Distance: Far
  • Smooth Lighting: Off
  • Performance: Max FPS
  • Advanced OpenGL: Off
  • Particles: Minimal
  • Clouds: Off

These settings were unplayable for me. Minecraft (press f3) reported around 60-65 fps, but it was laggy for sure.

I added another HD 5770 1GB to the rig and Minecraft reported 110fps+ and it was playable for sure.
I changed nothing else in the rig, only added a GPU.

Just did this today actually, as part of a spare-part build I'm working on :)

Hey Jiniix, thanks for your input, much appreciated.

Sadly though I spoke to the guy today, he says he doesn't actually have the money yet. :/ And going by what he is saying it could be "a while" before he gets the money. Probably so long that by the time he has the cash all the hardware listed here will be irrelevant.

So now this thread is kind of obsolete. Yay. :/

But thanks to you anyway, and thank you everybody else for your input! :good: :)
