agh i am soo indecisive about what i want to build/ upgrade to my comp now...

I want to use as many of the parts as i can from the system that i have now...

Here is what it gots::
P4 @1.6
760mb PC 2100 ram
80 gb HD
-and a case which i wouldnt use

the prob is that i want to add a videoboard but only have PCI

so basically can i use everything but the Processor and Mobo and add a few parts.. {GPU, MOBO, CASE, CPU}
 
why not? as long as you get a mobo that supports both the cpu u wanan buy AND the ram you already have. i dont really see why not...

are you asking for suggestions or something?
 
yea, i guess i didnt make that clear. I think i am right on this but help me make sure, RAM PC 2100 is 240 pin correct?? also does the DDR and DDR2 make a difference??? i was thinking about spending 200 on MOBO, and CPU, any suggestions... i want dual core as well, but as far as a chip goes something just to hold me over till i get more money....

Wrong pc2100 is 184 pin, anything bellow 3200 is, anyway the only thing i could see you use is the hard drive the rest won't work at all
 
Im a noob so idk about ram lol. And ddr2 is faster than ddr (i'm pretty sure. or gives better performance basically) umm... 200 for mobo and c2d? do you plan on overclocking? because even an e6320 is almost 200 dollars. But maybe you could get an e4300 and a cheap mobo, although i'm not sure how overclockable a board u could get for like 65-75 bucks.

well i wont overclock because im just getting a 100 dollar chip for now and will oc later... ok new plan considering i cant use RAM...

275 for

1) CPU
2) MOBO-must have Onboard Video
3) RAM-512mb
 
i read somewhere that there's not much difference from ddr and ddr2 not enough to go nuts and perform a full system upgrade just for ddr2. However once you get into the higher ram speeds (pc6400) i don't see how that can even be compared to (pc2700). Im personally making the switch to dual core at the moment but i don't think you could find a dual core intel board that doesn't support ddr2 ram then again i have not really looked. Im upgrading to an E6420 with 2 Gbs of dual channel ddr2 and a DS3 mobo for $450 (including $30 shipping) but i already have a graphics card so if you can handle that price you could probably get away with 1 Gb of dual channel ddr2 maybe at a slightly slower speed just to leave room for a video card. Thats my suggestion

thats a really good deal for someone on a budget and has good overclocking capabilities.

I wouldn't go to AMD, at the moment they are the one behind Intel, and the problem with an AMD board is that they frequently change the pin sets on the chips and require a new board with a more recent Chip, they 939 Socket will be dumped the minute they release their quad core if they ever do such a thing. And you will require a completely new build up.

I'd go with a Asus Motherboard that has Intel Quad-Core possibilities, as this should soon become widely available, if it hasn't already done so. And the good thing about this is the fact that Intel maintains its 775 Socket, which allows for a wide range of processors to fit into a single motherboard. My intel 946GZIS is capable of taking everysingle newly designed Dual Core processor up to the E6700, unfortunately it's not compatible with the X6800. But you get the point.

You should also consider dropping that ATI Radeon 1950 XT as the new GeForce 8800 GTX 700MB graphics card is a Direct X 10 compatible card and at the moment the reigning champion at half the price of a Radeon (at least where I live).

1- cpu
2- mobo
3- RAM- 512mb only (1x512mb)-

THat's $245 and the processor there could definetly hold you off until the quad cores come down in price (which the ds3 supports). So instead of going to core 2 duo, you could go sraight to the the quad cores in Q3. Also, with the remaining 30 dollars you could get a good HS/Fan for your cpu that you could keep when you upgrade. The memory is also a 1 gb dimm, which you could double two dual channel 2 gb later on for gaming and such.

Just a suggestion.

(for juss a lil cheaper, you could get an S3 instead of a DS3.)

Awesome i am going to change my sig to that!!! wow that saves a bunch!!!

Also i am going to add a case (sig) and a 30 dollar 450W PSU do you think that will be enough if i plan to get me a High end GPU and a Quad Core later??

Also how is the onboard video, i know onboard is never very good but mabye i could play some low-medium setting games with it... what do you think it can do???
 
Wait, on your sig you have a Geforce 8500. If you have a video card already, or are planning on getting one, AND want to overclock, i dont think you should get the 965G. Instead you should definetly get the 965P-S3 (s3 will probably last at least 5 years and is 20 dollars cheaper) or the DS3. The 965G has been known to limit overclocks (so that the onboard graphics dont get messed up??)

Also, keep the psu u have right now. Although a $30 psu might help you know, i dont think its something you would want to keep for long and would have to be upgraded anyway. I would say spending 75 on a psu would suffice. Or at least around 60. WHat type of psu do you have now?
 
well i was just going to get a small one for now then a better one when i get the GeForce 8500GT. so without the 8500GT can you guys link a PSU for that?? also my psu is a 250 W i am using just the HD and Drives from my old comp... this is just to start me off, i like to just add things as i go... i will only be overclocking the CPU BTW... so that said, which MOBO do you think will be best??
 
As i said before, i'm not the most knowledgable person here on the forum, but i heard that the 965G chips have limited the cpu's overclockabilities and most people believe the cause of that to be the integrated graphics. If you plan on doing BIG overclocks (like a 180% clock speed on an e6320, i.e. 3.3 ghz) then i'm pretty sure you should go with the S3 without the integrated gaphics. However, if you are gettin integrated graphics, your 250 watt psu might be good enough for now. Check with other people to make sure tho. Do you know the ampherage on the 12v rails? (Hopefully there is a sticker on your psu?)

i dont think you should have to upgrade your psu twice. I think yuou should try to make due with what you have now and upgrade to a monster later, or just start off with a monster. But the decision is up to you entirely.

What is your budget on the psu?

lol well, i have many posts because i dedicate time and i try to learn things on this forum.. i have very little knowledge, for instance, this is my first build...
also i do not know how to overclock, but my friend ADE is extremely knowledgable and i have been talking to him through xfire and he is going to wak me through the steps via voice... so i will do all the work and learn at the same time...


considering this is my first build, the outcome of the overclock will not be extremely important to me, but rather the knowledge of HOW to do it... also rember this chip is just to hold me over for the Quad core, therefore i think i will be getting the one with onboard video, plus i will not be able to buy the videocard for a little while... up grading the PSU for 20 bucks i think will be better than salvaging my "el cheepo" from the HP,
