Watch out vk3fcll, that's your post number 666!![]()
I see people on different forums always talking about how the Q6600 is better than the E8400. I still do not understand this thinking. I have both of these processors, and in everyday use the e8400 significantly outperforms the Q6600. On the majority of situations, the added two cores are not utilized to potential. This means that in the majority of situations the higher clock frequency is dominant. As far as the Q6600 being a good overclocker, 1[it is not quite as good as the E8400 for overclocking]. Many people say that the Q6600 is better because it is more "future proof". It seems incredibly absurd to use the words "future proof" when talking about cpu's. By the time software is supporting 4 cores in the mainstream, the Q6600 will be like discussing the Pentium 4. If you regularly do a specific task with software that utilizes the quadcore than it would definitely be the way to go. For most of us this is not the case. As it stands right now, the Q6600 loses to the E8400 in most real-life computing and while you are waiting for software to catch up to the point that the Q6600 is dominating.........Nehalem will be mainstream. Sorry for the long post.
it's better than the one word responses we get around here.![]()
Q6600.
Great post (as usual), hermeslyre.![]()
It's all greatly appriciated. This is by far the best info I could ever get from sombody at Fry's or Best-Buy![]()
Two things,
1. How much is not quite? .2ghz? .4ghz?
About .5GHz in my specific case. Granted, not an awful lot to some people. However, why overclock if improved clock cycle means little?
And the whole future-proof jib. It's really, really hard for insiders to predict when the software will catch up to the hardware. So I don't consider much of what I say on the matter near definitive. But I can say that recent steps have been taken by Intel that predict a fast and effective response to the situation. The bought a bloody game engine, they've never done that before. They're taking their massive R&D department off the leash and the target is parallel computing, symmetric multiprocessing.
Absolutely, it is coming without a doubt. Not many of us will be using our current CPU when it gets here though.
And while we wait, I don't actual believe the most of us would see such a large difference from the e8400, except for the better. They nearly cost the same for Christ sakes, it's not like we lose much going that route (cept a couple points in ______ <- insert synthetic E-penis benchmarking program here) yet we gain better multi-tasking and a, perhaps false or possibly late, sense of promise for future potential.
Seems to me that the Q6600 is the one that shines in the "E-penis (synthetic) benchmarking programs". The E8400 pulls ahead in all productivity software that is not designed for multiple cores (nearly everything).
Now this is just my opinions from using and researching both CPU's. I am relatively new to the whole "enthusiast" thing. I am sure many people can on this forum can show me the error of my ways. That is why I am here!
Sure messed up the quote thing. Sorry!!

it gets worse when you try to correct or point something out to them. They might get offended!Oh noes! noobs.
Some are very nice and knowledgeable on the other hand.. I've heard...
