Computer is slow all of a sudden; Suspected malware

So I turned my PC on this morning and after the initial motherboard splash screen, while it usually checks for how many devices are connected and I froze there for a while, much much longer than usual. It then continued with the usual bootup sequence and again took much much longer than usual on the windows startup screen.... This could be down to general clutter within the PC but I have an OCZ vertex 4 SSD so unless its faulty, I don't see how that's possible?

The SSD is just one partition for the OS and is only about half full so its performance isn't being drained because of that. I have fully up to date drivers too so I really don't understand!

Im currently using my PC to write this and it seems fine while its on, no real performance losses that I notice anyway.. Except the games ive tried wont load but I don't know whether that's related or not!

So after it booted I defragmented and scanned and deleted and cleaned and the startup is now much quicker (though, it still isn't quite as fast I don't think). The only issue now, is that it takes soooooo long to shutdown, where as previously my SSD could shutdown in an instant.

So is it malware or malfunction? What should I do?

Thanks in advance, guys.

So you've done a scan for malware? What did you scan with?

If you haven't already, I recommend you download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, install it, boot into safe mode and then do a scan with it.

I don't think you have faulty hardware, though it might possibly be worth checking your RAM with Memtest86 (or removing one stick and see what happens then). I used to have shutdown issues with 7 and it was because of bad RAM.

Not sure if OCZ have anything on their site which you can download to test your SSD, but have a look and see if they have something which you can run.

I scanned with Norton 360, I know its not the best, but its all I had :P

I will try with malwarebytes anti-malware first, then I shall do the rest of your steps, thanks jas!

Yeah Norton isn't great, it's possible it may have missed something.

I should have mentioned you probably want to do a full scan with Malwarebytes too. Shouldn't take too long (the joys of having SSDs! ;) )

Haha okay man just downloaded it, I will run the scan now!

Good good. Remove anything it finds and see if your problems are solved.

If not, I'd probably start looking at RAM. That could be one of the reasons why Windows is hanging on shutdown.

Scan for an mbr infection by doing the following.

Please download and run TDSSkiller

When the program opens, click on the start scan button.

TDSSKiller will now scan your computer for the TDSS infection. When the scan has finished it will display a result screen stating whether or not the infection was found on your computer. If it was found it will display a screen similar to the one below.

To remove the infections simply click on the Continue button and TDSSKiller will attempt to clean them or remove them.

After trying to clean them it will pop up with the results of the scan and its actions.

Please reboot the system if asked to do so.

After running there will be a log that will be located at the root of your c:\ drive labeled tdsskiller with a series of numbers after it example, C:\TDSSKiller.2.4.7_23.07.2010_15.31.43_log.txt

Please open the log and copy and paste it back here.

Have you ran Ccleaner lately?

Okay I downloaded and did the memtest thing to a USB flash instead, is that okay? I will run it while im out as im leaving now. And thanks john, I don't have time now but I will do it later when im back.

Should be fine so long as the CD or USB drive is bootable.

It may not be the direct cause of your problem, but it's worth taking a look at.

You could pull out one of your sticks, see if anything improves, if not, put it back in and pull out the other stick and see if anything improves.

Ran memtest for 4 and a half hours, says it passed after like 8 tests or something so I think its okay...

I need sleep so john ima do that in the morning, :P

So the log is to long to post, but it didn't find anything!

What now? RAM seems okay, and there are no signs of malware.. ://

If it were me I'd probably just reinstall Windows now, cos I'm like that, but wait and see if John can suggest anything else.

I checked the gigabyte website for any driver updates that might help and there was a new bios, so I downloaded that and all the drivers again, it seems to be fixed now so idk, perhaps a registry/driver issue?

Anyway its fixed now, thanks everyone.
