Computer messed up, don't know what to do

Ok, well I decided one day that I would go into my case and do the much needed cable management thing. I moved everything around and got it all cleaned up and looking nice when i decided to see if my processor had enough thermal paste on it. It had a few dry spots so I added some more. I continued to turn on my computer to play some WoW, and my FPS was down below 20 consistently, when before I had gone into my case, it was consistently running over 50 FPS. I turned down all of the video settings to see if the FPS would go up, but it didn't, not at all. I went back into my computer case to make sure everything was gettting power, etc. then when i checked back on the thermal paste, it had spilled over the edges a little bit. I cleaned that up and went back into my game and nothing had changed. No paste got on any of the pins or anything, just drooled over the sides a little bit. I went on to use prime95 stress test and my processor failed within a minute. I do not have any idea why my processor would just stop working with the same efficiency as it used to. It runs, but not with the same performance it did. Everything is not overclocked, and I just don't know where to go from here. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

How much thermal paste did you actually put on?

It had a few dry spots so I added some more.

You do know that less = more? I have a very thin film of thermal paste on my CPU, actually the same thickness as that of sellotape!

You don't ''add more'' either! If you want to put thermal paste on a CPU which has previously had it on, you must remove all the old stuff off it first.

Have you measured what temperature your CPU is running at?

My advice would be to remove all the thermal paste, and start again.

:)

I know I put too much on, I know that and I cleaned it up. My question is why is my processor running with so much less proficiency than it used to and what could I do to fix it? Could thermal paste be the reason why it ****ed up?

hmm

sounds to me like you have put a bit to much stress and heat on that processor and it may have gotten damaged by all of the paste acting like a jacket and holding the heat as opposed to transfering it

There is no paste on the pins or anything and it probably did overheat and get damaged. Damn, gotta go buy another processor now. Oh well, thanks for your guys help.

Woa, don't buy anything just yet, clean off the paste and apply a very thin layer of new paste and see what happens, it was probably just throttling

he only has 5/8 of an inch of thermal paste on his processor
Only?

Whoa too rash :)

Well I cleaned all of it off and started over.. even underclocked my processor, but none of it has helped at all. I really don't have much time to be fooling around with this stuff so I need to figure something out. Oh yeah, my computer also has random urges to not boot any hardware.. as in when i press the power button, The fans go on and I hear the hard drive beep at me like it always does, but not even the motherboard logo shows up, nothing, just a blank screen. Then i'll keep trying and it randomly starts working again.

Well there MUST be some solution to it ... I mean, all you did was replace the thermal paste and cleaned it up a bit... Did you ever touch the CPU with your hands? Perhaps static electricity could of damaged it? Processors don't just stop working properly when you change the paste ... Are you sure that you didn't change anything else, perhaps wires (maybe you knocked one loose ... I don't know how that would affect your CPU but you never know :P) ... Ermm ... Check your CPU's core speed (download CPUz). Tell us if it is running lower than what it should be.

No, it says it's running at 1.8 ghz like it should. Everything cpuz says seems to show that everything is normal. But what does it mean if under my L2 cache ratio it says it's full.. is that good?

I'm not sure about that, but if your CPU Core Speed is running like it should, I'd imagine there would be no problem with the CPU.

Is it just the game that runs slow, or every application on the computer which lags? Perhaps it's the game, or a virus ... Have you un-installed and re-installed the game? Try running a different game, see if you get a good FPS rate then ... And do a virus scan, you just never know ;)

Perhaps someone else could elaborate on what it means when your L2 Cache ratio is full  But, maybe that's the answer?

Also, what about the RAM? Have you checked to see whether that's in working condition?

Don't scrap it yet though, I reckon we could solve this ...

:)

I have checked the RAM with memTest, I got a number of errors but they are all numbers and I cannot figure out what they mean. I have not tried another game but when I ran 3Dmark2001, my score was only 6675 when it used to be almost 18,000.
