Computer Overheating

Two or three times my computer has been measured to be overheating really bad. I have left my computer on and then left for about an hour to two hours. When I come back the computer seems to be off. I try to turn it on but it will not work. I turn off the power supply and turn it back on and it will turn on. When I boot up into windows it is really slow and when I run fanspeed it says the core temp was around 83C and the temp1 was around 50 something. I have touched the cpu heatsink one time and been burned pretty. This never happens when the computer is on though. I can play games and have the computer running the entire day with no problems. It just when I come back and its off, its overheating. I shut it down for about 15 minutes and it is running at a good temperature. Im not sure whats causing this but the only thing that might be a problem is that I am using a 10 pin 500 watt powersupply in a 12 pin slot without the other pin plugged in. I read that it powers the on board video which I am not using. I am also using the stock fan. Any help would be great.

System:
Phenom II x4, Black Edition 955
ASUS M4A78T-E
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260
OCZ 4GB DDR3-1600

So basically it only happens when the screensaver/power save modes in Windows kick in? Try disabling them and see what happens. Sometimes those settings get all screwed up and confused and can do some really weird things. Changing them kind of refreshes the options and reminds Windows what it's supposed to be doing correctly.

Im not sure if its powersave mode. Its not in standby since a light on my computer would be blinking. It seems as if its shut down. But just wont turn on.

What Windows are you using? I don't quite understand what you are saying. When you say you shut it down for 15 minutes, do you mean you let it sit for 15 minutes and then turn it back on and check the temps?

If you are using Windows 7, it has different power plans and if you have never changed it, it is automatically set to shut down after a certain amount of time to save on power.

To change those power plans, go start->control panel->Hardware & Sound->Power Options

I have windows 7 64bit. What the power settings are set to is go to sleep and turn off the monitor after 1 hour. What is happening though is i come back to my computer and it seems as if it is shut down. no lights on the case, no fan moving on the cpu, nothing. So it is not in standyby or sleep or nothing like that. Its as if its shut down. It will not turn on though when i hit the power button. To get it to turn on I have to disconnect the powersupply and plug it back in after the motherboard loses all power. Then I am able to turn it back on. When windows starts the cores at 83C. Then I shut it down and let it sit for 15 minutes to cool down.

Yeah, I'd try turning off those power settings and see what happens. I've had a similar problem with Windows going into sleep mode in the past...

Have you changed the power settings yourself? Windows 7 is set to shut down the whole computer after a certain amount of time when it is not being used.

You may want to check that the heatsink is installed correctly. If it is, you might check the cpu fan and make sure it is still working.

Ok ill try that, its making me concerned because 83c is way too hot for it to be running. Its actually at that temperature when the computers off. When I burned my self it was before I turned it back on. I was trying to figure out why it wouldn't turn on.
