compy fried

well, i was working on an xbox and was gonna power it up, but my hard drive was laying on the power supply and it short circuited, frying my power supply and making a nice spark where i plugged it in. no problem there, as i had another power supply on hand. my real probblem is that when it popped, it sent a power surge, which sadly got to my computer and fried SOMETHING, but i don't know what. the xbox was connected to the same 6way power splitter and also to a tv capture card in a pci slot. now it gets no signal from the monitor. i was thinking it could be either a fryed video card or mobo. when i turn on the computer, i hear the cpu fan whirring and the hard drive spinning, but nothing on the screen. any insights or thought would be awesome :)

ps. this is my old sig rig.
celeron d 3060mhz socket 478
foxconn mobo
kingston 512 mb 2700 ddr ram
pny 6200 agp
350 watt master power psu

sounds like a video error to me as ive had the same thing happen and my indicator leds told me it was the video so if you have onboard try taking your add-on card out or try testing the video card in another system

Since your drive is connected to the board as well as the supply what is the item inbetween? The board! Since you are hearing the drive work and the surge went by way of ground through the board you should look that over closely to spot any discolored or scoring on it. You may just something that used to look like a cap or diode now fryed.

ok, i'll try lookin at the board o see if there is anything i can do. hopefully i will only need a small part i can solder on or something -_-

looked, and i can't see anything noticibly fryed. i guess i'll try to pick up a new board on egg and see if it works :(

Unfortunately the board was in the fuse holder in a sense caught in the middle. You now know not to leave a hard drive sitting anywhere but inside a case or an anti-static bag.

ummmm... it was laying on the p/s plugged in to the xbox, i was just too lazy to put the hd caddy there. i neverkeep my hds in antistatic bags. i haven't had 1 fry yet, that xbox hd is fine by the way.

I wasn't referring to putting it a bag when it's in use. That was when not used yet as seen when bought new or replacing a good drive with a larger one. One thing about this needs explaining. Why was a hard drive sitting on top of a supply or any other electrical or electronic device knowing that a drive is a magnetic storage device? Was everything running outside of a case or was there a case to begin?
