Connecting 2 wireless routers, wirelessly

I have the following situation. In the basement is a wireless router with internet access. On the second floor are a bunch of computers, which do not have wireless cards. Running cable between the two floors is impossible. The wireless router in the basement is a WRT54GX2 with SRX 200.

What I want, then, is to have a second wireless router on the second floor. It would connect, wirelessly, to the basement wireless router. The computers on the second floor would then be connected by cables to the second floor wireless router, which is receiving internet access from its connection to the wireless router in the basement. Thus, the computers on the second floor would have internet access.

I do not want to have to put wireless cards/dongles in every single computer. I want a wireless router in the basement, a wireless router on the second floor, with both providing internet access to the PCs attached to them by cables. Only the basement is connected by wire to the internet; the router on the second floor would have to connect to the basement one wirelessly, and be able to share its connection with those on the second floor, which would be connected by cables.

Can this be done? So far I've got conflicting information: it's impossible; it's easy; it depends on the models; I need a bridge not a router; I need to use 3rd party firmware; etc.

I just want a plain, simple, straightforward answer. Can this be done, and what do I need to do it?

Thanks.

ok cool. so there is two ways. One is to buy a old wrt54g linksys router (version 1-5 i think are compadable). Or you can buy http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-Cisco-WRT54GL-Wireless-G-Broadband-Compatible/dp/B000BTL0OA that one is easer to find then a older wrt54g. Then you can put a open firmware called dd-wrt on the router and connect it useing bridgeing.

Or the more expensive way but does the same thing is buying a wireless bridge http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WET54G-Wireless-G-Ethernet-Bridge/dp/B00008WMBT/ref=dp_cp_ob_e_title_0

Isn't changing the firmware dangerous and complicated, and doesn't it void your warranty?

If I buy a wireless bridge, will I need 2 (one for each end), or can a bridge talk directly to the wireless router in my basement?

First, no its not dangerous. if you connect to it via lan and follow all the steps it is safe. I have only bricked one router out of 20 i have tested and i messed up because it was not compadable. The linksys i showed you is accualy ment for you to use your own firmware so i dont think it voids your waranty.

Next no, you would only need one bridge. It will connect to your wireless network just like a computer. but it will have a ethernet port that allows you to connect it to other devices.

Personly i would go with the dd-wrt on the wrt54g just because if in a few years you dont need it to be a bridge, you can convert it to a router or a access point easly.
