core duo 2 release

Conroe processors should begin shipping in July while the Merom notebook processors should become available in August.

The current Core Duo's haven't even hit saturation yet, why so soon? I thought Intel would want everyone (who actually would) to upgrade now, and then again in 9 - 12 months.

Whats the performance difference from the current version?

The Core Duo's are in most notebooks.

The Core 2 Duo will be much better than the current Core Duo, it outperforms the FX-60 and FX-62. (Of course those are tests that Intel chose to run), but it will still most likely be better than any desktop cpu on the market when it arrives in July.

The only problem Core suffers from is the FPU is rather slow (Netburst has this problem as well, so intel added some 2x speed FPUs). For most things core is very good, for floating point its average.

thats in the Core architecture, i was under the impression that they had improved the FPUs for conroe (Core 2)

They improved them (a fair bit in SSE) but I think it will still have a weaker FPU engine then the A64s
