Corruption problems...PLEASE HELP!

Ok, so heres the deal:

I have a compaq presario desktop that has worked fine for about 2 years. I recently moved and when I went to restart the computer, I was met with this message "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windows\system32\config\system"

I have ran chkdsk and everything, followed the online guides with microsoft and tried to use the recovery feature with another XP cd. The problem is that I can not choose C:\Windows. All that shows up is I:\I386 and I:\MiniNT.

I have not been able to find anything that mentions ways around this and I know that windows is on C:\.

I don't want to lose the files on the drive, but I am willing to reformat it if there is a way to get the files off first. I have a laptop, but nothing fancy to go along with it...

Please help me get this system working again!

THANK YOU!!!

well you can reinstall windows on the same drive without formating it and all the data will be there. However all/most of the programs will not run again. that is the worst case sollution. The recover should work, im supprised it did not pick it up.

he said recovery, not repair.

I am not sure if I tried to repair or not, but I will tell you what I did do...

...I booted from CD, (it will not boot in any mode from the HD) and I selected "R" when it was available. I believe this is the Windows Recovery Console. How exactly would one go about repairing windows in this situation?

Thanks!

I tried reinstalling windows on the drive, but it was requiring me to format the HD. Not exactly what I wanted to do. I have a lot of info on there that I would like to see again, if only for a minute so that I could transfer it to my external.

Any other suggestions?
