CPU overheating

Well, I've had this computer for the longest time. And recently I rebuilt it and got it to run again. Regrettably, anytime I would play any games I would get all kinds of rendering problems and sometimes lockups. I figured the video card was dieing. Tried a new video card, no luck. Next I tried testing the RAM in a number of different tests, all telling me it was okay. I reseated the CPU, no luck. So today, I figured, jsut for shits and giggles, I'd run Prime95 and Speedfan to monitor the temps. Within seconds it was close to 100 degrees Celsius.
Soo, my questions are:

1. Is there a good chance I've damaged my CPU by playing with it running so hot? (I've probably gotten 10-20 hours gameplay on it since it's been put together)

2. Are lockups that common for an overheating CPU? I know an overly hot CPU can cause lockups, but I thought it was typical for a computer to restart when the heat gets that high..

yeah wow if its actually hitting those temperatures then you really do have something to worry about. first off, what kind of processor is it? ie, Core 2 duo, Core 2 Quad, AMD X2,

my suggestion, is that if your still using the fan that came with the processor, then the easiest and best thing to do in the long run is to go and buy a new heatsink.

and to answer your questions:

1. if the computer still turns on just fine, then you probably haven't damaged anything too bad.

2. yes, overheating causes lock-ups easily, and yes, it is typical for pc's to restart, but i dont know why yours isnt.

Now that I think about it. Maybe twice it's BSoDed really fast and restarted. Haha, I guess that was the heat protection kicking in ;)

Well get a new heatsink and install it. If you start up and it runs fine then your luckyif it doesn't then get a new CPU for your socket and use the new good heatsink on it.

Luckily it starts up fine still, I just choose to not turn it on.

what is your budget on a new heatsink?

Haha, not too much. I have to get some more thermal gel 'cause I can't find my old tube. But that's not too too bad. I'd rather not spend too much on another heatsink (I've been using a stupid stock Intel one). I have a Thermaltake Ruby Orb on one build that I like a lot, but I can't find it anymore. Erg... I's like to stay 20$ and under (I know I won't get too much for that, but I don't plan on OCing it much).
