CPU Overheats Easily

Hi,

Ive been having a problem lately with my PC overheating.

I'm just thinking of finding temporary solutions that might help

System temperature is fine but whenever cpu exceeds 60C. it will shut down. I am not overclocking my pc, and in several cases when I require high performance, I have to underclock it to prevent it from overheating.

Im using a MSI Dual Core Centre monitor cpu temperature, and although the max temperature is set at 80 degrees, it will still shut down before reaching it.

Is there a way to get my computer to comply with the maximum 80 degrees?

I know i probably need a new fan or heatsink etc. but if theres a way to increase my max temperature tolerance for the time being, it would be gladly appreciated

System

Windows 7

MSI K9VGMV motherboard
Amd athlon x2 4200
2GB Ram
nvidia 8600GTS

you've cleaned out the dust in your computer and checked that all the fans are working?
do you have your pc in an area or restricted air flow?
maybe your fans aren't set to run fast enough.
Definitely try applying or re-applying thermal paste.

these are all things to keep your temp down. i don't see why you'd want to raise the tolerance. if you just keep your cpu that hot you will definately fry it sooner than later.

definitely check the heatsink/fan for dust bunnies. major killer right there. if you can't improve the temperatures by adjusting airflow or you can't find any dust anywhere, then reapplying thermal paste would be your next option.

Is your GPU temperatue within its maximum? If this is happening while you're gaming this may be the case. If your CPU is staying <70 degrees Celsius under full load it should be fine IMO. Are you sure that the program you're using is accurate? Try to find out if your CPU needs a temperature offset to read the right temperature.
