Dell Inspiron 5150

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the club and I can only thank anyone who has posted threads regarding the piece of crap laptop I purchased about 5 years ago. I own a Dell 5150(P4, 3.06 Mhz with HT, Windows XP) which recently decided to stop working. I've contacted Dell after reading threads about the recall and class action lawsuit (Called the Sundell Case) which benefitted those who were aware of the recall. Unfortunately, no one seems to be accountable regarding notices to past owners.
For those of you who have considered buying Dell I recommend you do not. They're not interested in backing their product, they're not interested in getting someone who enunciates in understandable English, and they're not interested in out of warranty support even though they have a department called such and they certainly aren't concerned about employing people in this country to answer the phones or build their computers. It's all about the cost and when your computer goes to pot, well............tough shit!!
They're offering a repair on my computer for a slim $499.00. If I paid that much I'm not certain any reasonable person out there would buy a used computer of 5 years for that much. I was one of those people who weren't notified about the recall or problems until it was too late.
I'm venting to inform those of you mislead to think Dell gives a crap about your purchase that they don't. So I say don't buy a Dell!! For anyone
with an opinion, a post relating to this computer, I'd like to see it. BTW, anyone interested in buying my laptop if I have them repair it? They'll guarantee their repair for 90 days. WOW, such a offer!! What's holding me back?

It's a 5 year old laptop and you want them to fix it? I bought a pair of Nike's 2 years ago and the sole fell off them last week. Maybe I should call Nike and ask them to fix them.

I guess I should have mentioned that the lawsuit happened in 2005. My computer wasn't even two years old. I guess integrity isn't important to some.
I hope when you buy a car and it brakes down due to a dealer recall don't cry about it, either even when it's two years old.!

You can't blame dell for not trying to repair a 5 year old desktop. If they try to, they will either not have the parts, (atleast windows xp anymore), or they will break it. No laptop company I know of has a 5 year warranty. For $499, that seems reasonable for a laptop this old.

True, you can't expect a 5 year old component to recieve service these days as far as computers are concerned. For example, if I had a 5 or 6 year old PC that had a dead motherboard and I sent it to Dell or wherever I bought it, they would be of no help because they don't have a 5-year old motherboard (Pentium 4 era) around anymore because they have to make room for the current Core 2, Athlons and such motherboards. Plus, even if they did have a P4 m/b in stock, it'd cost more than just buying a basic PC off of their website.

Laptops are even harder to expect service years down the road as companies like Dell use companies in distant countries to build their laptops (and desktops) and those companies are always changing something, going out of business, or merging.

There's some people that think Dell and HP and other co's actually BUILD their machines down to the motherboard! They actually think they have a HDD factory, a memory chip plant, etc. I know most of you guys know that some of these companies don't even touch the computers, but for what it's worth...

Yeah you can't really expect them to repair a 5 y/o machine. I think we have to realize that Dell isn't the only company that is throwing together cheaply built machines to make more money. I don't think they build them knowing that they'll break either. I however won't buy any more Dell laptops because they feel cheap to me and they just haven't lasted. For example when i first got my laptop the casing was warped so that when set on a flat surface it would rock back and forth slightly. I didn't send it back because I just wanted to use it and it wasn't THAT big of a deal, but all the same you want your $1300 purchase to be PERFECT when you first receive it.
