I have a desktop, with a mobo nforce 680i.
2.66Ghz duo, 8800GTS, 650w psu, antec 900 case, 2gb ram DDR2

The mobo is completely fried :[.
So i guess its time for an upgrade. I only have $300-500 =\ I'm quite broke at the moment.

I'm very very noobish, when it comes to building computers and knowing what is compatible with what. Any help would be amazing!

Is a my graphics card compatible with anything or should i upgrade it?

I want to get a DDR3 mobo. That's compatible with everything I have. I talked to 1 person and he said get a AMD3/AMD3+ But will that work with everything I have?
If I get a new AMD3/3+ http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-BDL_X4955_M5A88M%28ME%29.aspx
I want to get this one, should I?

Would I need a new PSU for my new mobo?

Sorry for all the questions.

EDIT:

Will any CPU work? or is there something special i should be looking for?

well with a new obo you will need a new copy of windows unless you have a retail copy, not an oem (if it came on the computer it is oem i believe). But you could get that cpu, that or a similar mobo, i recommend one like this (link below), with that cpu and the ram then the os too

then you just need to check if the hdd is a sata interface. also this cpu can unlock to a 5/6 core, and also be overclocked like crap, it is really a locked down thuban which is a 6 core, then they lowered the power and all so it would be a green cpu basically. and that leaves you plenty to upgrade the gpu as long as the psu is a good one, which is it though (brand mainly, model would be nice)

Why would your recommend that mobo? Was the current one i was looking at not good or something? (I hope that didn't sound hostile)

What do you mean a "locked down thuban?" and a "green" cpu?

Yes, Your card is compatible with whatever mb you pick.
If The card isn't powerful enough to do what you want it to do, then upgrade it.

The M588 mb has the 880 chipset/built graphics capabilities, but a vc can be used instead. It's also micro ATX, a little smaller than ATX. You could get that one if you wanted but I think there are better options. Take a look at ATX mb's with the newer 970 chipset.

Whatever Phenom II or later AMD cpu you choose will work with a mb that has the AM3+ socket.

Need to know a couple things -

What do you use the pc for. Is your graphics card performing as well as you need?

What is the brand and model of the power supply?

Can you reinstall the operating system you have, or will you need a new product licence for Window 7? (old harddrive won't be plug and play on a new motherboard)

I'm looking at the reviews for this mobo suggested by jonnyp11. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128490&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-RSSDailyDeals-_-na-_-na&AID=10521304&PID=4169961&SID=lmu7ogp1xcdx
What is the "fx" people are talking about and saying its not compatible with the mobo.

Should I be looking into a difference mobo now? What should I be looking for when buying a motherboard?

I'll be using my pc for Mostly gaming, and internet (facebook) and whatnot.

I'll probably have to buy a new OS or search around the house for one.
I dunno what type of PSU i think its a corsair

sry, didn't notice that, but the fx cpu is amd's newest line, but so far they are a flop, a soon update may fix this some but prob not enough. here's another if interested

and to the earlier question, that mobo was just a lesser brand (noy by much though) and had less features. also what i meant by the other stuff was that thuban is a 6 core architecture that uses 125w, so they took one, lowered the mhz, dissabled 2 cores, and by doing that made it only require 95w and run much cooler than any equivilant cpu, so by using less energy it's similar to a "green" product. but it can be unlocked in the bios to get the extra 1 or 2 cores out.

^ I disagree. Asus is great. I called tech support, and they did their best to help me out.
with all due respect, I find that hard to believe. There are many more instances just on this forum (just a mall sample of ASUSs total customer base) of piss poor asus service than excellent service.

thats the operating frequency of the ram. 1333 or 1600 MHz. 1600 is the best for price to performance right now.

that all looks like it will work well together.

What should you be looking at when buying a mobo?
That's a good mb. Other than brand, here's some determining factors it has.
CPU Socket Type - AM3+
North Bridge - AMD 970
South Bridge - AMD SB950
SATA 6Gb/s
Decent onboard sound card
Several USB including the latest/fastest 3.0
2 x USB 3.0 + 6 x USB 2.0
And it's ATX, which gives you more room to manage the pci slots

@ only $5 more after shipping I would go with this cpu.
AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition Deneb 3.5GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Desktop Processor HDZ970FBGMBOX
Another 1/2 Ghz at the stock setting w/o overclocking and without getting an aftermarket cpu cooler, /which is what you would need to reach that speed with the 960T. And there's no gauranty the 960T will unlock to an x6 even if you needed 6. You could end up with a quad @ 3.0.

It wasn't even my laptop. I called for a friend, and honestly they were very intelligent, and respectful.

Let's just say that I've owned numerous amounts of ASUS products from monitors to motherboards... never had a problem.

Then again I'm probably an ASUS fanboy....

I dont think your a fanboy. Giving your experience is not fanboyism.

of the numerous Asus products that you have owned, have you had to RMA any of them?

that is where most people run into trouble with asus.

If you plan to OC, or have a aftermarket cooler, then yes. Otherwise, your cpu cooler will have paste preapplied to it from the factory.

What do you mean OC? should i be buying a better cooler as well?

OC = overclock. It is using the BIOS settings to force the CPU or GPU to run faster than they were desgined to run.

You do not need a new cooler if you are leaving the cpu stock.
