Hello All!

Ok so a couple days ago my desktop started to freeze. Every once in awhile my cursor will just freeze for about 10-20 seconds. I ran malware and mcafee scans...nothing found....?

suggestions to fix this issue...

thanks!

Ok step 1 get rid of mcafee right away, terrible program. If mbam didnt find anything I'm not sure its virus related. Is your hdd clicking at all right before/during the freezing? If not download and run combofix

After you get system hangs go into your Event Viewer and see if you can find any error codes.

You may want to also try running an error checking scan on your hard drives first. If that scan is clean, run Memtest86+ for several hours to test your RAM. Then defragment your hard drive and then replace your Serial ATA cables to your hard drives.

If you can get any error codes out of your Event Viewer under "Computer Management" that is in your Control Panel it may point you in the right direction.

no clicking or any weird noises when freezin occurs. i'll download and run combofix now and let u kno how it goes...thanks

ok i think my pc was freezing because it was slightly overheating and really dusty/ i cleaned up the dust a bit and put fans on 100%...system seems to be running fine. :)

apparently..after a few days my computer started to freeze again...ugh i dunno why now. I don't think its a virus..ran virus/adware scans..nothing found...i'm thinkin maybe overheating? not too sure its annoying....wat u guys think?

Hi,
Restart during the freeze by that you mean after your desktop "freezes" are you able to restart properly, or are you force shutting down and this folder is reopening on start up because it's the last folder that was open.

Thanks

Isn't that the most frustrating feeling ever!?

My PC did that. It was the DVD drive. If I leave it unplug it never freezes. For some reason if I plug it back in and do stuff with the drive it rarely freezes. But if I leave it plugged in and ignore the drive, my computer can freeze randomly. I replaced the drive, but it happens anyway, although less often. Changing where the drive was plugged in the motherboard seemed to make it stop for a while, then it would come back. I guess I never really solved the problem.

The Event viewer showed the errors. It seemed to be a timeout error, corresponding the the SATA port that the drive was plugged in.

ughh yes:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

so your saying i shud view the event viewer to help find the issue?

Heh heh, that is what I said several posts ago. :) If you can get any error codes out of your Event Viewer under "Computer Management" that is in your Control Panel post them here for us to review.

I personally think your motherboard is defective but it could be something else. Also try switching the port that your hard drive is connected to on your motherboard.

I would check for 2 things in this case. I would stop all unnecessary programs from running on bootup and test the system and if it still did it, I would run a diagnostic on the hard drive.

under computer management it says i've had 3 errors in the past hour and 8 errors in the last 24hrs. cd rom seems to be the #1 error. says: The device: cd-rom has a bad block. suggestions on my next step? thats one error there are a few others which include: WMI and DISK.

ALSO there are 1 warning and 6 audit failures in the last hour...
thanks!

Most likely your cdrom drive is bad, unhook the data and power cable from it and see if your system still freezes up. I bet it don't.

i just put a dvd into my cd-rom drive and it regonized and played the dvd no problems...haven't tried unhooking it yet...u think the cd-rom drive cud still be bad even if it can regonize and play dvds?
