desktop freezing help!!!

He was having intermittant system hangs.

Does the system become completely unresponsive requiring a reboot, or does it eventually recover?

Dak1b, have you ever observed the active processes list during one of these hangs? That may help you narrow down which device or software is causing the issue.

To answer your original question, yes, it could be related to a device, such as a hard drive going to sleep and needing to be re-spun up. This issue can also be caused by a buggy program or service running in the background.

Threads merged, please don't re-start a thread with the same problem. May lose vital information in the process, thank you...

I'm with whoever was talking about software hang ups. I would also agree that you should try a fresh install of Windows. If you've got Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can just select to do the install without deleting the partition or formatting the drive and it will move any files/folders that normally would be overwritten to a folder called "Windows.old" under your C: drive. You will lose your program installs, but I would say that if the problem is bothering you this much it would be worth the try.
