Desktop hogging wireless bandwidth?

Hi all,
As the topic title suggests, this is about whether or not a desktop can use disproportionate amounts of the internet. Recently one of my housemates has had a desktop delivered. Until this point everyone in the house has been using laptops and apart from my housemate we all still do and the internet has been 99% of the time fine. However since my housemate has had his desktop delivered the internet has seemed slower and less stable than it used to be, which has led to, I believe, the router resetting itself more than once which I have been told can happen if it is struggling with the amount of data travelling through it. Is it coincedence that the internet has appeared laggy and less stable since the desktop arrived or does it genuinely use more bandwidth on a wireless (owing to its size). If the latter is true if there anything I can do about this as it is quite frustrating to say the least or is the only way around this using a LAN cable like I have done on a couple of occasions?

Please don't make more than one thread on the same subject, i've deleted the other one.

I would suspect that there is constant downloading going on with the desktop. Most likely file sharing programs are being used. I would ask the user of the desktop if he has a program that runs all the time downloading music, movies, etc. If this is not a new desktop then maybe its infected and is causing constant communication.

My sincere apologies johnb, when I initially tried to post the topic my internet browser and lagged and then appeared to do nothing so I tried posting again. The posting twice wasn't deliberate :(. Erm as far as I am aware and I am pretty sure of this, he doesn't use any file sharing programs at least not on a regular basis. Even if he did, when he had the laptop there was no such problem with the internet, only since the desktop arrived. In addition to this someone has told me (again could be complete bollocks), that if his desktop is nearer then it will make my wireless signal weaker, leaving it prone to dropping out.

Is the desktop connected wirelessly or connected using an ethernet cable? What router is being used?

Erm its a Netgear router (one sent by internet provider, Sky in Uk), and the desktop is connected wirelessly.

If there isn't anything running on the desktop that downloads all the time then I have no idea what could be wrong. Maybe a faulty router, I've seen it happen when too many wireless devices cause router issues. What model of netgear is it? That might help pinpoint the issue, some of their cheaper routers are garbage.

He does do some online gaming but its not constant but I guess it could be that, btw the router I think is model V2 DG934G (Netgear)
