Desktop Memory Question.

Hello all.

My desktop is an HP Pavilion Multimedia m7470n, which has 2Gigs of installed Ram - with a max capacity of 4Gigs. Last night, I went out in search of best prices on an additional two sticks of Ram. My pc (according to specs) takes DDR PC-3200 Ram, but 'Best Buy' had a sale on their Kingston DDR PC-2700 sticks (1 Gig/ at $58.99). I questioned compatibility issues, and was informed that there would be none. The only thing would be a slightly lower speed issue, but that would be (I was informed) so little as to be negligible.

I got the Ram installed, and was - quite honestly - a little disappointed. I would have thought that there would have been a noticeable increase in speed, but it is nowhere even near what I expected. Could it be because of the differences in the two sets of Ram? And would it behoove me to return these two, newly purchased, sticks, and just hold off until I can find the PC-3200 sticks on sale? Lastly, are the 'Kingston' brand considered good?

Advanced thanks.

If the amount of RAM in your system wasn't a bottleneck in the first place, increasing it ain't going to help a lot. You probably weren't even using all the 2GBs of RAM already in your system, especially if you have XP (Vista is another thing as far as memory usage is concerned, but doubling from 2 to 4 gigs should boost the performance a fair bit).

We also need to remember that ddr memory is old now and 2700 or 3200 is simply old and slow.

I would return the chips you bought and wait until you buy/bulid a new computer.

60 bucks for 2700 ram is outrageous too! Best buy is a ripoff whenit comes to stuff like ram.

Get your money back!

Yes...methinks that this (returning the Ram) will indeed be the order. All that is on the front of my system, now (aside from what was earlier mentioned), is the AMD 64 Athlon X2 designation.

I wanted to increase the Ram because of I am now working with Software music sequencing programs, as well as using my pc as a digital darkroom for my photographic works. I will now try to wait until I can afford a much faster machine, and I thank everyone who took the time to respond.
