Do I need a sound card?

Hey Guys :)

Pretty simple question, do I need a sound card?
Some people buy them, others don't. If I want a computer with sound, do I need a sound card?

Thanks

Simple answer no. However if you require or want top quality sound AND have the speakers / headphones to match, you cannot go past a discrete sound card for higher (than onboard) quality sound. It also used to be the case that sound cards would take a load of the CPU, however this point is rather redundant with newer CPUs.

OK, thanks. :)

What speakers do you have?Cheap speakers, and some cheap headphones, like under $50, dont need sounnd cards at all, like my $30 set. But, lots of speakers and headphones above $50 should have a sound card.

Say what now?

It was a spammer. Don't worry about it.

I Will agree with both Bigfella and byteninja2 but I don't think that a dedicate sound card is all that necessary. My recommendation would be to use onboard for now and if you want more get a dedicated card later on.
