I am reformatting a computer with an old,old version of XP...I downloaded an execution of SP3...Is that all I need or do I have to install something else first,like SP2???
 
No you don't need sp2 installed... worst case is if you do need sp1 or 2 installed it will tell you after you start... but i am pretty sure you don't need to have them installed.

yes definitively, might as well install sp3 first though just for speed sake. and then go online and get the rest of the 80 updates that came out after sp3. :)

Service Pack 2 MUST be installed before Service Pack 3 is installed, otherwise SP3 won't install.
 
eh im pretty sure i installed sp3 on top of sp1... are you positive... reguardless of who is right it will tell you if you are missing a pre-req... ms is good about that.
 
Google searches i have found 2 answers either at the very least sp1 and others say sp2...

Im pretty sure i have gone from 1-3 but since i have worked for a school a tv station and a retail chain... i have installed sp3 so many times i dont even remember what i did anymore. if you want to be absolutely safe just go through windows update and let them tell you what you need.

It did tell me.....It said "Your trying to do to much at one time mister!!!!!"....

Yeah! I tried to install SP3 but it said there is a "HotFix" I had to install first,but I knew I was gonna have trouble when I could'nt connect to the internet cause I could'nt install the network driver for my Gigabyte board cause it wanted at least SP 1/2....I'm not kidding!!! Who ever heard of SP1/2????!!!!! Said I had to have a least SP1/2....So I got it put on (SP1) then went from there...SP1/2 may be a common thing; just may be new to me...
 
That is most likely SP 1 or SP 2 shortened. I dont think MS has ever put out half a service pack.... but i wouldn't put it past them. maybe they called those "roll ups" back in the 2000 days... ha
