dual channel DDR-RAM

hey guys..!
what exactly does dual channel mean?
do we have to use KITs to be able to use this feature?
does it make any difference when using 2 normal RAMs?
thank you!

You dont need kits, basically any two sticks of RAM that are the same size will run in dual-channel mode. But to help minimize any problems, the RAM should have similar or identical timings, be the same speed, and generally should be the same manufacturer.

Basically, dual channel is 128bit access where single channel is 64bit.
You don't have to get the kit, but I'm quite sure you need identical pairs of modules.
And if you want duel channel, you have to keep it in pairs. Though, I've not heard a definet answer if all pairs have to be identical.

Darnig Omega! I had this one...just got a phone call while I was typing :P

And you can use dual-channel mode with different models of RAM, I used to do it in my "ghetto" rig I had before.

i see... but how do can we activate this dual channel mode?
I already have 2 RAMs from corsair value select @512MB. Im sure they are identic, but does that mean it can run under dual channel mode?

The good thing about the kits is that you will get two sticks of identical ram, so you know that they will run in dual channel.

I still dont understand what this "identical" and "dual channel" mean.
why cant 2 same branded RAMs with same latency and frequency be identical? , and also run in dual channel mode?

It should automatically be in dual-channel mode. Go to www.cpuid.com, download cpu-z, and click on the memory tab. It will tell you if its dual or single channel.

If it's in single channel, make sure the memory is in the right colored slots, your mobo supports dual-channel, and that it's enabled in the BIOS.

aha.., I checked it in CPU-Z, and it says it's single channel.
I guess I put the RAM sticks on different colors on my mobo ( ASUS P5B).
should I put it on the same color? ( so there would be 1 empty slot between them?)

Well, I once got lucky. I had 1 PC2700 512MB Low density stick with one 1GB PC2700 Hi density stick and ran just fine....then I got my new computer and it wasn't. So I was lucky at the time.....
