Dumb question

you realize that even on ebay those cost over 600, for that much you could get up to date with a 2500k, a decent gigabyte z68 mobo, 4 to 8gb's 1600mhz ram, a good psu, and a nice case and possibly win7 too and other accesories.

QFT. Outdated hardware isn't worth spending money on. It may be the top of the line for its class, but it is still outdated and not as advanced as the new revisions and generations of processors available on the market today.

Who in their right mind could possibly want Win 7 ? Every new version of "Windopes" that comes out, is BIGGER, MORE BLOATED, AND SLOWER, than all the versions that came before. Day will soon come when you will have to have an FSB up in the terabytes to type a letter in less than an hour because of "WINDOPES" getting more and more BLOATED.

Why don't you actually try Windows 7 (On an up-to-date machine) before making assumptions like that. Believe me once you start using Win7 you'll realize everything before it is junk. And all the old farts still using XP just need to accept that its days are numbered. Times and technology change. Yes, there are some flubs here and there (Vista for example - it is meant more for Desktops than Laptops) but there is always a better revision after the failure (maybe not in the case of HP though, but that's a different story).

agreed

and actually for win8 they're cutting it down and for the dev preview it boots and works wayyyy faster than xp on my old comp (althoug for some reason it doesn't like my computer so doesn't work right and can't use my wifi adapter so i can't use it.)

I had a 600 MHz K6-3+ machine with 512 Meg of RAM that ran an XP-Pro - 98-SE dualboot just fine. Faster than some newer machines I have seen. How would it do with Win 7 ?

It would run pretty slow.

And I know what you mean about old machines and XP - I've gotten some old PIII's to run XP pretty quick. Doesn't mean I'd want to use it though.

I took about 5 minutes and tried the dev preview. I think I'll wait for an actual beta/release candidate or the final product before I actually try it more. I'm perfectly happy with 7 and feel like it may have a reign like XP did....just not as long.

i sort of liked it, only prob was on this and other comp, after a while it began to freak out and the coloring and the other stuff got corrupted or something so it screwed up, think i may have held power button once or twice on each as i wanted to go to bed and not wait for it to shut down as i am very impatient at times.
