Erratic Shutdown

Alright this really bugs me not only because it is so unpredictable but because this computer is only a month old. I bought pretty decent components and my computer was running very nicely until about a week ago. I was just booting up my computer and it shutdown a couple seconds in but the lights on the computer stayed on (power indicator). I turned it off and on again and the fans didn't even start up. I turned the power switch to the power supply off and on and then it worked. A couple days later, it did the same thing. This is weird because there's no possible way it's overheating because I can have my computer running for hours on end and not have this problem. Yet sometimes, once after not using the computer for 2 days, I turned it on and the shutdown came right back...Any ideas on this? I'd hate for this to be a hardware problem and have to replace something but it's so erratic I don't know if it can be a software problem (especially since the reset is random when it hits, sometimes it hits before windows actually comes up and sometimes it hits when the XP user selection is there). Thanks for any help. :)

most of the time this is because of overheating
but if you say it's not then check the power supply
try to use a decent one

i had the same problem when i first built my computer.... then i got a huge ass power supply and it has run GREAT ever since

Power Supply

Well my power supply is 550W which is much more than the specs on my computer should need I think....
Here is my system, I could be wrong:
Intel BOXD915PBL Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 915P ATX Intel Motherboard
eVGA 256-P2-N516 Geforce 7800GT CO SE 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card
Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 ATX12V 550W Power Supply
Intel Pentium 4 640 Prescott 800MHz FSB LGA 775 EM64T Processor Model BX80547PG3200F
OCZ Gold Series 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit System Memory Model OCZ25332048ELDCGE-K
Western Digital Caviar SE WD800JD 80GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

This worked beautifully for a while and it still works great when it works but it's a random all or nothing type thing. It can't be overheating because it does it just on startup and when it does startup right, it goes forever without shutting down...

I think 800MHz is the bus speed, the operating frequency is 3.2 GHz. Is that bad though :S hmm, I wonder if I should have got a different one? Anyway, would this be causing the problem?

It could be a faulty motherboard. That was the problem on the one computer I fixed recently with the same symptoms as yours.
