Guys,

I have an external 160GB Freecom HD which is roughly 2-3 years old and have 20GB left. I have pc with an USB cable attached attached to the back of it so that i can connect to it for ease of use. My PC is custome built and has a Intel Pentium E2200 Dual CPU chip which was originally WinXP but have installed Win 7 Ult recently. Now, when i connect my external HD via my USB cable, for some reason it takes a long time for it to recognise the hardrive, roughly 1 minute i would say. But when i connect it to my Toshiba Laptop which as a core2duo cpu it only takes a matter of seconds roughly 5-10 seconds for it to recognise . Therfore my question is, why does it take such a long time for my PC to recognise my external HD compared to my laptop?

Did you install all the correct drivers like chipset, USB 3 if it has it? What motherboard do you have?

I did not install drivers, i just connected it via the cable, i have usb 2.0. It is an Asrock 4core1600-D800.

Unfortunately, asrock's website doesn't list windows 7 drivers, only xp and vista. You may try downloading vista 32 or 64 drivers depending on which version of 7 you installed. Sometimes vista drivers will work on windows 7.

It is a Win 7 Ult 32-bit os. Is it faster on my laptop which i bought roughly 1-2 years ago, because it is simply a newer machine? Although it did have Vist installed but i installed Win 7 Ult 32-bit 5 months ago.
