far cry

well i really didn't and don't remember. i do remember playing with fraps, so i may have already defragmented, but when i was playing with fraps i wasn't paying attention to anything but the fps. so i'll play it again later and we'll see. maybe i can catch a video with fraps, post it and let you guys see what i'm talking about when referring to lag. it may be so slight that you guys don't notice it.

Well i just picked up a 22" lcd at 1680x1050 so i'll try playing it maxed out at that resolution on my rig in my signiture and see if i have any problems. Since normally i've just played it at 1024x768 maybe the higher resolutions has something to do it.

well i guess the defragmentation was the problem. i loaded it up and no stutters that i noticed. i will do keep playing and see if anything shows up. on another note, i picked up 2gb g.skill pc2-6400 for $45 free shipping from newegg. the only thing i'm irritated about is that i paid $70 for 1gb pny a year ago and only used it a week. o well, i guess i've spent more out on one night at a bar anyway...

Good! That 2Gb of RAM will better fit your system, I bet you can play Crysis on highish now ;) If you OC that 3850, you can get alittle extra performance as well, should you ever need it.

yeah, the only reason i hesitated on the RAM was because i already have a gig and already spent the money on it a while back. i figured if it got some use i got my money out of it. but that's kind of silly seeing as RAM is really cheap now, and who knows, when i was actually ready to buy RAM it may be up in price. so i may as well buy it now and have a use for it rather than use worse RAM thinking i'm getting my money's worth when i really wanted more! :P

you can't really beat $45 and free shipping for 2GB of good RAM. thanks for the help, btw!

Glad ya fixed the problem. If you havent tried crysis you should seeing how you like far cry. Crysis is much better.

it still does this sometimes...i checked the RAM usage and it's up there...around 100%, maybe like 50mb free when i am playing. you think that could cause the quick stutters?

This is with 2Gb's? Yeah that's strange, did you patch the game all the way up yet? It can help to solve these types of problems, memory thrashing or leaking, whatever you're experiencing.

As I said sometime earlier, stuttering is usually memory/HDD based. The memory seems to be taking a beating here, that's not supposed to happen, not on far cry with 2bg's of ram..

i only have 1gb at 5400 right now. the 2 gbs were ordered and supposed to get here on friday but they pushed the delivery till next week, so that's why i'm running just 1gb of pny for now. and it's using like 980mb when i play far cry. still seem abnormal? sorry if the sig confused you.

Nope, seems normal. The stuttering should be solved with the extra Gig, as well. Come back if it doesn't. :)

awesome. yeah i got orange box today and was playing it monitoring the RAM and the RAM maxed out a couple of times. affected game play a little bit, but not much. i think the extra gig will be a great addition and will let you know. thanks!

so i started playing half life 2 last night after i got my 2gb of g.skill installed. everything on high settings, between 100-150fps, RAM is holding steady, CPU is holding steady (does half life 2 run both cores??? cause they sure were both running at about 55-65% simultaneously), and maybe i'm being super scrutinizing, but i swear there are little lag spikes here and there. but i don't know, it could also be vertical sync not being turned on and just looking like a lag, but really it's being close to an object and the object seemingly distorting as i turn quickly. does that make sense? i mean even if it is lagging, it's not that often and it's way less than 1 second of lag, so i don't know if people might experience this and just not notice it (or ignore it), or if it still seems unusual? i haven't played far cry yet...

but when it does it, the fps doesn't drop, the cpu doesn't spike, the RAM doesn't spike. if it's not normal or so minute that i shouldn't be noticing it, i have no clue what could be causing it.

Do you have V-Sync on or off?

Sounds to me like your just having screen tearing every once in a while. Turn on V-Sync and see if that helps. Sometimes your video card can just run things too fast for your monitor.

I know some people hate running with V-Sync on because it "caps" their fps. But your monitor can't display any more than its refresh rate anywho so I don't see a big deal. It helps me when my graphics card is just rendering too fast for my screen.

Just an idea. As you said there weren't any frame spikes or anything just random little lag like issues.

your monitor really can't display over the refresh rate? so if it's at 60hz then your monitor will only show 60 fps? interesting.

so is screen tearing normal? you are right, nothing spikes so nothing seems abnormal. i definitely think i may be analyzing it too much.

v-sync is off for now.

If V-Sync is off, try turning it on.

V-Sync syncs your gpu output to your monitors refresh rate to put things simply.

If you monitors refresh rate is 60hertz then your essentially limited to 60fps. With V-sync off your gpu will still try and pump out all the frames it creates. The monitor can still only "paint" 60 of those frames on the screen, so tearing can occur if its trying to do more than that amount.

With V-Sync on, the gpu will put out the correct amount of frames for the monitor. This way you don't get those extra frames tearing.

Putting it simply.

If V-sync is off, turn it on and see if it stops your issue. V-Sync

Edit: Here is the Wiki for V-sync if that helps explain it a little bit better. And I am not saying that this is def your problem. But the symptoms to point to it imo as your system shouldn't have an issue with this game.
