i know very little about linux, and im wondering which distributiong that i should get. So heres a poll to see what your favorite ones are.

Gentoo is phenomenal - not from a speed perspective (others will argue that) but primarily from a system administration perspective. Keeping a Gentoo system up and running smoothly is a dream compared to Redhat or Suse. It may seem like a pain at first (especially etc-update), but it will save you headaches in the long run. I wouldn't go so far as to say that it forces you to know what you're doing - but it does keep you informed.

If you're new to linux, this may not be the best option.

what is SuSe? why are there so many different versions of Linux/Unix? just a lot of custom mods? whats the point in running them anyways?

knoppix is great for extracting SAM files from windows....

i tried to use redhat 8.0 but i had way too many driver(what do linux ppl call them?) issues for it to be functional.

Knoppix is great to "play" with Linux and see how you like it before installing it. I think SuSe offers a "live cd" version as well.

i've only tried redhat 9 and it was a disaster. im voting for ubuntu cuz' i plan to use it next and i've read and found it's compatible with my wireless card and should recognize automatically.

Knoppix and Mandrake

Knoppix cause ya can just pop it in, run it, and go.
Mandrake cause its got a wide variety of packages and destop environments.

My favorite distro of Linux is the system I've built from the kernel up.

After that, I'll go with Ubuntu.

4W4K3, if your card is compatible with Linux, it doesn't matter what distro you're running. It's possible that Ubuntu ships with the kernel modules preloaded for your card, but if that's true then you can make it work with any version of Linux that has that kernel.

i know, but being a Linuz n00b i had no idea how to "get it to work" manually. i literally printed out a 3-4 pages guide on how to install madwifi and other drivers i needed jsut to get it to work...and failed at every attempt. after about a week f trying i said screw it i'll take my chances with a friend's copy of XP or go without until i can get another distro.

i suck at Linux:(
