feel stupid asking this?

Whats overclocking?? I hear or read it alot on this site but i dont know what it is. Can someone explain it to me and possibly tell me how to do it if its a good thing.

Have a look at OC 101

In short we could say that overclocking is pushing a computer part to go beyond the manufacturer's limit. So, if a CPU is clocked at 2.4Ghz and you overclock it, it would go beyond that limit, perhaps to 3.0Ghz. Thus it would be faster. Doing so voids the warranty of products, but it appears (because I've never actually done it) that its easy to do and would not do any noticeable harm to the part provided that the OC wasn't too extreme.

Btw, that's not a stupid question, its just a desire to learn ;)

Hey, i would like to overclock my pc, its a Intel Pentium 4 1.80 GHz... I would like to know whats the highest i could overclock it to?

I do know that i should overclock little by little, and not all at once.

Thank you:eek:

i am taking what you ask is what is the hightest point you can push your PC until it will overlock?? you dont make too much sence

good = faster processor at no additional cost
bad = possibly shorten lifepan of processor , more heat, risk of burning out the processor.

I personally wouldn do it, its not worth blowing my warranty over.

It Up's the Voltage, Thus speeding up the Processor Speed (in simple ass terms)

I mean like this example-->

If my CPU is at 1.8GHz... what would be a recommended amount to overclock it up to? idk like 2.0GHz or 2.2GHz, without it causing any damage. And how long should i keep it overclocked?:D

is that clearererer? haha :P

you dont always need to up the voltage. some dual cores can go pass 3ghz without upping the voltage at all. most people already upgraded their processor before it dies from ocing.

as long as it is not constantly running pass 60c you should not have problem.

the only way to keep the overclock is to bios overclock.

1.86 - 3ghz i would say should still be under 60c if you invest in a good aftermarket cooler and some good thermal compound.

I would go "SOME VERY GOOD" Thermal Compound.

Although I don't know much, just to clarify what Kof said, you could OC a Core 2 Duo from 1.86 to 3.0, but MightyKing was talking about a Pentium 4, which would definitively not OC that high... I believe they are fairly bad OCer since they already run so hot (someone could correct me on the latest part?)

if your rig is prebuilt, in most them you can't OC cuz they locked IMO

Not sure if that's entirely true. I don't know because I built my PC but there should be a way to unlock it. I wouldn't suggest overclocking a computer if you don't know what you are doing. You can very easily fry your processor.

The key to overclocking is increasing speed slowly. OC it a little bit then check the temperatures, let it run for awhile and see if it fluctuates. If you just OC it 600mhz and dont monitor it, you can very easily fry your CPU. I fried mine and it wasn't even overclocked that much. I monitored the temperature for awhile, then stopped watching it. When I wasn't paying attention the temperature skyrocketed and my system locked up.

Hmmm, I'm not anywhere near a good cooler, i have only like 2 fans...

So my guess is that overclocking is pretty risky huh?

And if so, can I buy a processor and replace it with the old one? Will it work? Or do i need to buy a new motherboard?

I'm not good with these things.:o

Alright I might just do that. By the way, what would be a good processor?

By the way, in order to choose a processor, i have to know how many pins right? or something like that...

Like how many pins does a Pentium 4 have?

Depends on the socket of your processor. You cant "easily fry" your processor... either the computer would just give you an black screen and you have to reset the BIOS or the temps go flying. I have an 1.3GHz overclocked at 1.43GHz, VERY stable, no BSODS or freezes yet. 400MHz OC'd at 560MHz, 2.8Ghz @ 2.96...

I'm pretty sure that an 1.8Ghz CPU is outta warranty anyways. If you fry the CPU, I'm sure 1.8Ghz CPU's are cheap these days.

Thanks oscaryu1, thanks everyone.

I think I'll just buy a Dual Core processor, I don't think i have the experience and hardware to overclock and monitor my CPU.

I opened a new thread to figure out which CPU is recommended. I'll overclock sometime in the future when this Pentium CPU is crap.

Thanks for the responses.
