File Transfer Program

Hey, I was just curious to know if there were any programs that allows better file transfers over a network than using the usual file sharing with explorer.

Say I want to transfer a big file; with explorer, all you get is a small box estimating how much time it takes and you can't pause it if it takes to long. :( But would there be a program that does the same thing, but it displays the %, the speed, etc. and have the ability to pause the transfer, and/or verify the copy when the transfer is done? :)

Oh and maybe have the ability to make a sharing folder (or something similar) which copies the contents on both (or more) computers either automatically or periodically

Thanks!

There's a lot of ftp program but then again you can't use the program to transfer to s share folder. The destination pc HAS to be an ftp server.
Correct me if i'm wrong but i don't think it works with file sharing the way you're saying.

Yes I know that, I'm not talking about a ftp program.

*Face Palm* Yes I know th... Listen, I'm just asking if anyone know or stumbled on a program like what I described that does similar things of that of an ftp program, but on a network.

My description is similar to the downloading programs we know of because it would be useful to have something like that in transferring large files (or many files) on a network instead of using the shared folder method.

To be honest Patrickv pretty much hit the nail on the head when suggesting / mentioning an FTP service. I find that having an internally managed / run FTP service is a hell of a lot more beneficial and stable than using basic file sharing and IE transfers, and it's also the most efficient way of managing files and folders across a network. That would be your best bet for large file transfers. And it also offers everything you asked for.

Breaks.

Ah I see now! Obviously I'll have to do some research on internally managed FTP! I though ftp was only an internet protocol or something, but now that you say that, it does make sense to be able to have a ftp on a network (or is "Intranet" the correct term), hmm...

Can you guys give me any leads on ftp info/lore? Thanks!

And also, it would still be interesting to find a program like I was describing without the ftp in mind.

Patrickv again hit the nail on the head. Those are the exact two applications I use for my network FTP's. Bulletproof FTP for the server side application and FlashFXP for the client side application. Both, in my experience of running mutiple FTP's, are extremely well equiped and very efficient / easy to use in my opinion. I too definitely recommend both of those applications.

As for the file sharing software without the use of FTP's I'm not entirely sure on if there is an alternative to the Windows File Sharing Feature. Although if there is I'm sure someone will have a decent suggestion in mind :).

You could use something like BitTorrent I suppose but you'd have to configure it to work over a LAN and every time you wanted to send a file you'd need to make a torrent.
