First Build for new work/gaming desktop

Just about any x58 motherboard will hold two 580's. A good many of them will hold three, including the one you've picked.

As for the PSU, provided you get a high quality unit, I'd go with no less than an 850W for two, and an 1100W for three. Perferable more, since neither choice would leave a whole lot of head room.

I wasn't thinking of 580's at first. But right, a 580 wouldn't be $500 later as it is now. hmm, alrite I guess I need to rack up a list. If going the 580 route with a higher PSU is too expensive then 460 is the choice....

Okay, here's my list. I'd like to buy this within several days. Little more kinks to go but I need to get this done. Tell me if I've failed or...failed. :D

CPU - i7 950
MOBO - ASUS Sabertooth X58 -or- ASUS P6X58D
GPU - GTX 580 (SLI later) I will not be overclocking
PSU - need 1,000w? not sure
SSD - not sure
RAM - 12GB (I know thats a lot but for work, second option is 6GB)
Case - COOLER MASTER RC-692-KKN2 CM690 II -or- Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UW
HDD - at least one TB

not looking for an expensive case.

I'm trying to make this future proof as you can see. Problem is I don't know the deals to find this stuff for. I know links have been posted in this thread already but some have expired. How do I find the package deals on newegg?

Looks good, except for the hard drive. 7200.11's aren't particularly fast drives, and have a habit of bricking themselves due to their awful firmware. They're cheap for a reason.

I doubt you'll fill up 1.5TB anyway...go for a better 1TB drive. Samsuing Spinpoint F3 and Western Digital Caviar Black are the usual recommendations.

I'd wait 12 days and see what happens when the ATI/AMD competitor to the 580 comes out. And honestly.... who the hell needs 2 580's any time soon? I've never run Crysis, but Metro looks fantastic (really beautiful) on my single 5870 (although I do definitely hear the fan) ... I'm pretty happy with FSX as well. Unless you're totally about E-Peen, and you're not, I have trouble imagining you'll ever get to a point where you're thinking... "Man... this extra $450 would be best spent on another overkill GPU." If nothing else, I don't think game developers have put out anywhere near a good enough game to deserve $900-$1000 in GPU. When I was puting my parts list together 4 months ago for my Sig, I was gungho about XFire 5870's.... but one plays everything and I'm still waiting for a game that's worth the $370 it would cost to double my card.

Also, I don't know NVidia cards, but for another $15 I'd get Asus over Galaxy, or at least research the Galaxy brand.

Well, I ordered it. Only going with one 580, and the Galaxy is the one that was in my cart. From reading up on the 580 EVERYWHERE, I see that with SLI its not worth the penny. Thanks for all the help from this forum, it put me in the right direction. :)

EDIT: I'm curious whats the difference on the MB that jevery is talking about? AM3 socket? P6X58D vs. P6X58D-E?

Ugh, well shoot. It's already gone thru. I'm thinking my only option is to send it back once I get it then...:( Its already been shipped...I sent an email to newegg about what are my options. I'm hoping I can return it and get the correct one with only paying the difference.

Well I've never seen an x58 board that isn't capable of SLI, but here's some options:

About the same quality:

The Asus Sabertooth has a 5-year warranty, so I'd go with that if you can afford it.

The i7-950 only mates with Intel socket 1366 motherboards. Socket AM3 is for an AMD processor.
 
I think he was referring to the cheaper Gigabyte mobo I posted...the USB3.

The biggest ones for me are that the CPU VRM section isn't as beefy(better OC stability), and it lacks Sata 6GB/s. (which you'd want for the SSD)

It also has fewer PCIe lanes, and lacks Firewire, eSATA, and optical audio output.
 
All the parts except the PSU will be coming in on monday (wow, thats quick). I've heard many good things about the Gigabyte mobo you posted. ...and I have to ask, sorry, what is the difference btw the gigabyte version and sabertooth? Just different companies? I'll be purchasing one of those as soon as I can get a refund on the incorrect mobo I chose.
 
Different companies, yeah. They have very similar specs though. That's why I recommended the Sabertooth, since it has a 5-year warranty vs the Gigabyte's 3. They're both great boards, though.

I'm actually curious as to why they gave it a 5-year, since the higher Asus models only have 3-years...
