First Build for new work/gaming desktop

Edit: Oh... I missed a few posts in this thread... yeah, you gotta get a MoBo that match's your CPU socket. And since you're in LA it'd save you $85 to get the CPU at Microcenter, if you didn't already know. If you're returning your MoBo, I'd return the CPU too and get one from the Microcenter in OC/Tustin if the drive is worth $85.

Alright, I got the parts. Its all put together. Problem is it won't start. If I turn on the PSU it'll start up for a split second and then stop. Lights go on, fan in PSU runs but then it all just dies. Seems like something isn't getting enough power somewhere. I can't tell.

Oh and the power button does not work. I'll look into that rite now...

-CPU power is plugged in at top left, the 8-pin.
-RAM is correctly put.
-What are the motherboard standoffs?
-GPU is plugged in.
-24-pin is correctly plugged in.

Is there a way to isolate the problem by eliminating certain parts.
 
The motherboard standoffs are the little metal pegs that you put in between the motherboard and the case. Did you remember those?

Alright, try this:

Disconnect everything from the mobo/PSU except the CPU, GPU, and one stick of RAM. If it doesn't boot, move the RAM stick to another slot. If it still doesn't boot, try another slot. Make sure to try at least one slot from each channel. (channels should be separated by color)

If that still doesn't work, move to another stick of RAM and try again.

If you do get it to boot on the first try, start adding hardware back in one piece at a time until it stops working, and you've found your faulty piece. If none of this works, it's likely the mobo or PSU. DOA products do slip through from time to time.



edit: also, double check to make sure all of those standoffs are in the right spots. If you put one in a hole that your motherboard doesn't use, and then put the board on top of it, it might be causing a short.

alrite awesome. i took it out of the case and only plugged in the essentials. PSU 24 connector and the 4 pin to the cpu. the cpu is in, heatsink fan, gpu, keyboard, mouse, monitor, and one stick of ram. problem is the monitor doesn't show me whats happening. it is plugged in on standby but nothing shows. I'M GETTING THERE!!

what gives tho...
 
It's working with everything plugged in? Or just with the basics?

Either way, if it's working now, it sounds like a loose connector somewhere was probably the culprit. :/
 
You may be right. I did install windows 7 and everything is fine. This question is off topic but how can I connect to the internet? Do I need to buy a router and modem? all that jazz stuff? My notebook has a wireless card that uses the neighbors internet (I pay them). What do I do with my desktop

You need a PCIe /USB wireless card to still connect to them
 
^ Doesn't have to be PCIe...regular PCI is still just fine for such things. PCI/PCIe ones perform the best, but USB ones should still pick up and are often cheaper.
