first build, low budget

I am planning on putting up $600 for a new system… (don’t need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, or speakers) just the case and everything inside it :). If someone could help me out with a build that would be great. I do play games, not so much now as my current system is ancient… 5-6 years old. (64mb vid card!)

Someone told me with a lower budget I should go AMD. Is that the smart move? Or does it not really matter?

Well it kind of is really. However AMD are likely to scrap the AM2 socket within 2 years while Intel have no reason to. There are also some good budget Intel CPU's knocking around now that are perfectly good for what you want. Now currency, I'm guessing that it's USD but I'm unsure. Confirmation?

You are correct. Jet makes a valid point with the X2 though. It is about 1/3 cheaper and you probably wouldn't notice a difference depending on what you do.

You could use the extra cash to upgrade other areas.Or if you want to get it under $600 before rebate.

The X2 will overclock as well, but not as good as the conroe.

Why not go with a amd build for that budget? i know there are many Intel fan boys here :P

But for $5 more you can get a 5600 than can be overclocked and at stock speeds will whoop a E4500. The 5600 is on par with the E6550 i would say at stock speeds. But you still need to fit in a OS

Hmmm... cheaper plain case... the RAM is DDR2 800.. could downgrade...

WOuld an E4300 bottleneck it?

You're $68 over budget, plus the fact that you need $89 for an OS. You're going to have to cut somewhere big.

Here. I'll try my hand at this ;)

Like i said, for that budget i think he will get more out of an AMD build... i mean $150 will get a 5600 which is by far better than a e4500. I think its on par with a 6550 (stock speeds)?

Well, it isn't amazing, but it is well rounded, ie. the parts are of good quality. I don't believe I skimped on anything. The Windows XP Home is cheap; you could spend ~$10 more on Vista Basic, but I don't like vista ;)

Thats actually a pretty darn good computer for $600. Only imagine what you would get if you bought a $600 HP or Gateway

Both AMD and Intel will have need socket soon. No reason building then!
