Ok so summers starting up and I will be heading off to college in the fall. I am being bought a laptop for my graduation present but i want to have a nice desktop rig as well and i ahve allways wanted to build my own, so why not now? I just need some input and a few suggestions.

HARDWARE:
Case - Xion Onyx XON-303
PSU - Xion Supernova XON-600FF14R 600w
MoBoCHANGE - Gigabyte GA-965p-s3
CPUCHANGE - Intel Core2Duo E4400
GPUCHANGE - GeForce 8600GT 256mb
RAMCHANGE - G.Skill 2GB(2 x 1Gb) 4-4-4-12 DDR2 800mhz
HDD - Segate Baracuda 400Gb 7200RPM 3gb/s
IDE - Lite-on 20x DVD + R

Ok so i changed a few things around, and went from Amd ------> Intel; notched off the sound card for a later date;but kept my case/psu/CD/DVD rom drive. Anything else you guys think i could tweak? or would this be a nice system?

BTW; all off of newegg it costs $829 + shipping + tax. With $70 in mail in rebates this look pretty good for a decent rig or think i can shop around for cheaper?

also get a 8600GT/GTS if you can

I agree with that, get a better GPU rather and 2 which u will SLI, you will be able to save on the PSU and the mobo and will have a better result.

You can also save on the sound card, as the mobos come with sound already, only buy a sound card if you want more once you bought ur comp, but usually it should do.

As for the PSU, I don't know them and too lazy to check on them now, so I won't comment.

get a core 2 duo e4400 or e6320 and a gigabyte DS3
opps also get a 8600GT/GTS if you can

why should i go core duo? ive been screamed at "gaming = AMD, mulitprocessing/work = intel"

and i also looked at going SLI b/c the two 7600's are cheaper than one 86/8800, is it more worth the bump in price to go with the higher end single GPU?

and the sound card was more a splurge item, plus i love my music so i figured spend now would be the same as spending later, but yeah, i might scratch it out to save the 70ish bucks.

thanks so much guys, really helping out

7600s are not DX 10 and will be useless in future games no matter how many you have core 2 duo is better for gaming and i have graphs to prove it

The only way i would go with amd would be with the 5200+, 5600+, 6000+ in benchmarks the 5600+ is neck to neck with the e6600. The reason i went with amd is because of my budget...

For an $800 budget get:
Core 2 Duo E4300/4400
8600GTS
Gigabyte 965P DS3

7600gs is not a gaming card at all and two of those I don't even think would compare to the 8600 series.

Core 2 Duo E4300/4400
8600GTS
Gigabyte 965P DS3

is the price difference between a e4400 and a e6600 worth the cost? I dont know much about processors so I am trying to figure it out, thanks
