Its scary out there looking on newegg on my own for the first time for a mobo.

My goals are the following:

no more than $190'ish
Brands: Asus or MSI
socket: Intel
2 pci express x16 slots
dual channel
1-2 pci slots
1-2 pciex1 slots
plenty of usb ports

Other notes...I plan on using linux, vista, and xp, I want my board to be overclockable, and this is the ram I'm going to purchase...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227231

Also, I plan on purchasing a sound card for this computer too (a cheaper creative sound blaster probably for $50 or less)

I'm familiar with pci express x16 slots but what is the PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot? Is this compatible with ur 200 dollar nvidia or ati card, or Is this a new-not-time-tested technology to avoid or what?

I know my goals are probably steep for a less-than-$200 mobo.

After I get a board I want to get a vid card for $200 or less so no igp plz.

I'm a little overwhelmed here...any input or links here will be greatly appreciated.thx

Pick your processor, then you get a motherboard that is compatible with it, then you see what RAM will work in you motherboard....thats kinda how it should be done.

What processor are you going to use? Then we will help you find the perfect motherboard! You can get a good motherboard for $200

I forgot to mention that I want a three panel display by the end of the year too. I guess that only has to do with my vid card but I thought I'd mention that in case that aids in the decision making process.

I know a lot of people that buy open box stuff and get some sweet deals...I personally don't do it....I had a bad time once with open box stuff.
What model of intel core 2 duo are you going to get? (they are all LGA 775)

Thats what this place is for, we will help you make good decisions. Don't feel bad...everybody has to learn.

My budget is below $130 for a processor. I plan on getting a decent vid card (about $200) to make up for a more budgeted cpu.

I use photoshop, illustrator, flash, indesign, and blender pretty heavily.

These prices are after rebate, but it will be a great system. After rebates it will be about $500. Is this too much for you? We can start down grading if you need to.

I gotta go(wife and kids need me for a while) I'll be back in a couple hours and can help you again.

Try to get a total budget for the entire system and we can start getting pieces together!

(supports the CPU with new BIOS)
http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P5K Pro

RAM - you will need more than 2 GB of 6400 for the stuff you are doing, that will slow you down big time

CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz for $170 (I know its more money but you will not regret it)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115037

Keyboard - Logitech Classic Black 104 for $11
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823126023

I saved you a little money in a few places for the bigger processor, you WILL need it for the work you are going to do.

If your not a serious gamer, you can save a little money with a little cheaper graphics card, this is kinda an overkill for the things you will do. I can find a cheaper one that will run fine.

The stuff you have not bought totals $576! I wrote in a few things that you have already bought, just my suggestions thats all. What do you think?
