First timer. Is This Good?

Opening the case might void the warranty, regardless of why you did it. Some companies, though, accept adding hardware / cleaning the components as a valid reason.

Also, I have no idea where you get this idea that it's "supposed" to run in dual-channel. Just because it has the capability, doesn't mean it's "supposed" to be run that way. Yes, it would make more sense to use the feature, but not doing so definitely won't "void the warranty" or cause any problems.

Any prebuilt computer manufacturer that says my warranty is void if I open my side panel to clean it, or install more memory, or add another hard drive, can kiss my hairy buttocks.

Why don't you explain, so even I can understand, the theory that 6Gigs of RAM running in single channel will outperform 4Gigs in dual channel please.

Hell, if that's the case, I wonder why they spent the extra time and money to make the board dual channel in the first place, since there's no "real world difference"... let alone triple channel like my board.

Fair enough.

Well, if there isn't enough memory to do something, stuff gets swapped out. Now, I'm sure you know the performance implications of swapping stuff in and out. The theory is that, with more memory there will be far less swapping which means better performance, since even the slowest RAM available these days, in single-channel, will vastly outperform any HDD/SDD currently out there, even when RAIDed. Speed of memory will not make up for low capacity; no matter how fast the RAM, if the computer has to rely on permament storage to supplement the RAM, the performance will suffer.

Now, of course, common sense dictates that nobody is going to use infinite amounts of memory, therefore adding capacity will only increase performance up to a certain point.

As for "spending the extra time and money to make board dual channel in the first place", there are people and programs that WILL benefit from it. As I said, in most (that doesn't mean all) real-world situations the performance difference will be negligible. Certain types of applications will benefit from it, some just noticeably, some significantly. But seeing as the OP is a first timer and not fully aware of the performance difference between single-channel and dual-channel, it's extremely unlikely that he uses any such programs.

It's a friendly discussion, not a "war". I'm fascinated by this viewpoint.

Wtf? said:
I just bought a car that's supposed to run on 8 cylinders,
but it only runs on 6...oh well, I don't need the other 2 since It's my first
car and I'll never notice...

Now I'm rather confused...

I'm not surprised. :P

I find your opinion fascinating, that you don't need the "extra" performance,
even though it's being stifled from the start, because the OP is a first time
builder and won't notice the difference.

You've already admitted that running the board in Dual Channel is ideal, but
you're still arguing that it doesn't matter.

Misunderstanding, I see, let me rephrase myself:

What I was trying to say is, the performance increase going from single to dual channel would most likely be so insignificant for him that he'd be better off just having the extra 2GB in there.

At the same capacity, of course dual-channel would be ideal, but if I was to choose between capacity and speed for a first-timer, I'd go capacity in a heartbeat, because even though he might not use all the 6GB, he'd more likely benefit from that 50% increase in capacity rather than double the bandwidth as far as the performance goes (so, no, I don't think he's being stifled of any performance).

Of course, I can't tell for sure since I don't know what exactly the computer's going to be used for, hence I'm generalising.

looks like a good system and worht the price your paying...you said you have discount on top of the price you mentioned right?

Yeah, i just ordered the system yesterday. Everything came up to $1016. With tax it was $1078 with free shipping.
I did end up keeping the 6 gigs in there. As others have said, i most likely won't noticed a difference between single channel and dual channel memory. As a matter of fact, i never knew about that before i came to this forum! Sometimes forums can make you paranoid and overthink things i guess. lol

I called HP yesterday and spoke with rep and asked him about the 512mb ATI Radeon HD 4850 and how it requires a 450 watt power supply, but this machine only comes with a 350 watt power supply. He told me that he gets this question all the time and that they have thoroughly tested all the components on these machines to the max, and they wouldn't configure it that way if they knew it couldn't handle it.

I'll see if this is true, if not, i can upgrade the power supply to a more powerful one. But right now, i'm pretty happy with my purchase.

Lol is right. I'm sure you'll have no issues with this configuration, since the HP rep told you so...

Best of luck with your new build.

It actually is true that alot OEM's have a sticker, that if you break the seal by opening the case, voids your warranty. This was much more common back in the day, but i know quite a few however still perform this practice.

Back in the day, when you were a kid? :P

Which ones still perform this practice?

No comment on the Single vs Dual channel issue? How about the
under powered GPU?

Back about 10 years ago when i started getting into computers almost all of them did. Not entirely sure which ones still perform this practice as i dont deal with OEM machines, other than older ones that people want upgrades for or such. Maybe ill take a field trip to bestbuy tomorrow and see which ones have those labels on the back still.

How can you say "i know quite a few however still perform this practice" and not be able to post a single name?

Because ive seen them on computers still, but i see enough computers that i dont recall who makes all of them. Im relatively certain cyberpower and ibuypower still perform this practice, though the last time ive seen a system from cyberpower it was a year and a half old system, so i couldnt tell you if they still do or not.

Not like there is much to be said about the GPU since it has already been bought, but at that price point i would have expected a 4890 or GTX260c216 with it. And your right about the dual channel, unless its a specific option for "6gb Dual Channel" they will probably use three 2gb dimm's.

They probably will, but let's hope they don't. Actually, the OP has been convinced it won't make a difference in performance, so it doesn't matter either way.

And you've got him too scared to open the case and take a stick out. :P
