Flash Drive needs format

I had copied about 12 gigs of photos onto a PNY 16 gig flash drive from a dying computer, and had been able to access the flash drive several times thereafter. Now when I attempt to access the drive, it tells me that it needs formatting. I've done the computer-manage-storage-disk management-error checking without success (again tells me that the disk is not formatted), although it states that the drive is RAW data and healthy. I get the same results on two computers, so I know it's the flash drive. I downloaded a couple of recovery programs (icare recovery and mini-tool power data recovery), both of which did recover the data, but won't let me save it without purchasing the key. Anyone know of a truly free and functional recovery program, or another way to go at this? Thanks in advance!

Look into Image Rescue (made by some memory storage company - can't member which) but it is very good and worth the money you spend on it.

Thanks for the quick response. Image Recovery looks pretty good, but I was hoping to find a free program that could do the job. I'd hate to spend $40-80 for a one time deal. Thanks.

Thanks for the help. Here's the follow-up. I downloaded from download.cnet.com the program PC Inspector Smart Recovery from Convar. While it seems to be tailored to all types of photos, it worked great for me as there were only a few docs on the drive - the rest were pics. True to its description it is a free program - not just partially free, then you need the license key to save what was recovered. This program saved almost 900 pics, then copied them over to my photo gallery. It did take 3-4 hours to complete, though.
